Air Canada Aeroplan
Aeroplan is the most flexible redemption programme in Star Alliance — and arguably in any alliance. It books 50+ airlines (not just Star Alliance members), allows stopovers for 5,000 extra points, mixes partners on a single ticket, charges no fuel surcharges on partner awards, and transfers 1:1 from Amex MR. For UK travellers, it is the specialist tool that solves complex Star Alliance bookings other programmes cannot handle.
You do not need to fly Air Canada to use Aeroplan. Most UK travellers fund it entirely through Amex MR transfers, deploying points only when a specific Star Alliance booking offers better value or availability than Avios, Flying Blue, or Virgin Points.
Lufthansa First Class from 90,000 points one-way. No fuel surcharges on partner bookings (just a C$39 booking fee). 5,000-point stopovers — visit two cities on one ticket. 50+ bookable airlines including non-alliance partners like Emirates and Etihad. Mix Lufthansa + Singapore + Thai on a single award. Amex MR transfers 1:1. Family pooling for up to 8 members.
The Partner Award Chart
Aeroplan uses a fixed, distance-based chart for most Star Alliance partner flights. Pricing is predictable — no dynamic surges. Air Canada’s own flights and “Select Partners” (United, Emirates, Etihad) use dynamic pricing, but the vast majority of Star Alliance partners remain on the fixed chart.
Fixed partner pricing (one-way, from/to Europe)
| Distance band | Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|
| Within Europe (0–2,000 mi) | 7,500–15,000 | 20,000–30,000 | — |
| Europe–North America (3,001–5,000 mi) | 30,000–35,000 | 55,000–60,000 | 80,000–90,000 |
| Europe–Middle East (2,001–4,000 mi) | 20,000–25,000 | 40,000–45,000 | 60,000 |
| Europe–East Asia (5,001–8,000 mi) | 40,000–47,500 | 70,000–80,000 | 100,000–110,000 |
| Europe–South Pacific (8,001+ mi) | 47,500–55,000 | 80,000–90,000 | 110,000–120,000 |
Fixed pricing applies to most Star Alliance partners (Lufthansa, SWISS, ANA, Singapore, Thai, Turkish, EVA, etc.). Air Canada own flights, United, Emirates, and Etihad use dynamic pricing with higher ranges. Partner booking fee of C$39 (~£23) applies. No fuel surcharges.
The Sweet Spots
Lufthansa First Class
90,000 points one-way from North America (or via Europe). Availability appears 14 days before departure for partner programmes. The Aeroplan search tool is one of the best for finding LH First availability. A C$39 fee + minimal taxes.
EVA Air Royal Laurel Business
62,500 points one-way Europe–Taipei. One of the best Business Class products in the world. Taipei is an excellent stopover. Add 5,000 points for an onward connection to SE Asia.
Stopovers for 5,000 points
Add a stopover to any one-way award. London → Istanbul (2 nights) → Bangkok: same Business pricing + 5,000 points for the Istanbul stop. Two destinations, one ticket. No other major programme offers this on one-way awards.
Non-alliance partners
Emirates and Etihad are bookable via Aeroplan (dynamic pricing). Also Cathay Pacific on select routes beyond Hong Kong. No other Star Alliance programme offers this breadth of non-alliance access.
Short-haul Europe from 7,500
Intra-Europe flights on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Turkish, etc. from 7,500 points in Economy. Frankfurt to almost any European capital at the lowest distance band. Plus C$39 fee. Competitive with Avios for short-haul.
Lap infants: 2,500 points
Most programmes charge a percentage of the adult award or fare. Aeroplan charges a flat 2,500 points for a lap infant on any award — including Business Class long-haul. For families with babies, this is exceptional.
Earning Aeroplan from the UK
Amex MR: Transfers 1:1 to Aeroplan. This is the primary UK earning path. Transfer only when you have confirmed availability — do not build a speculative Aeroplan balance.
Credit flights: Any Star Alliance flight can be credited to Aeroplan. Earning rates are distance-based by fare class — generally lower than crediting to a European programme, but Aeroplan status credits count toward elite qualification.
Family pooling: Up to 8 members can share a single Aeroplan pool. This makes accumulating enough points for a premium award much faster — combine points from 2 adult Amex cardholders into one Aeroplan household account.
No expiry: Aeroplan points do not expire as long as you have any earning or redemption activity every 18 months. Amex MR transfers count as activity.
Search on aeroplan.com first — it has one of the best award search tools in any programme, showing availability across all Star Alliance partners with calendar views. Confirm the route, dates, and cabin. Then transfer Amex MR and book immediately. The C$39 partner fee is the only cash cost on most bookings — no fuel surcharges.
Mixing Partners on One Ticket
Aeroplan allows up to 6 segments on a single one-way award, mixing multiple airlines. This is its killer feature for complex itineraries. Examples:
London → Frankfurt (Lufthansa) → Singapore (Singapore Airlines) → Bali (Singapore Airlines) — single one-way award, priced by total distance, up to 3 partners on one ticket.
London → Istanbul (Turkish, with 2-night stopover) → Bangkok (Turkish) — one ticket, one stopover, 5,000 extra points.
No other major programme makes multi-carrier, multi-stop itineraries this straightforward to price and book.

Who Aeroplan Suits
Complex multi-city itineraries
If your trip involves 3+ flights, multiple airlines, or a stopover, Aeroplan handles it better than any other programme. Up to 6 segments, any Star Alliance partners, one ticket.
Surcharge-sensitive travellers
No fuel surcharges on partner awards. A Lufthansa Business return that costs £400+ in taxes via Miles & More costs C$39 (~£23) via Aeroplan. Same seat. Fraction of the cash.
Families
Family pooling (up to 8 members), 2,500-point lap infants (any cabin), and the ability to build stopover itineraries that work for family travel. The most family-friendly programme in any alliance.
Less suited for…
Everyday UK earning (no UK credit card beyond Amex transfer). Short-haul European redemptions (Avios is usually simpler). Air Canada own flights from UK (dynamic pricing, limited direct routes). Quick bookings — complex itineraries may require phone calls.
Aeroplan is the problem-solver. When a Star Alliance booking looks impossible — too many connections, too high surcharges, no availability through European programmes — Aeroplan often finds a way. Fixed partner pricing with no fuel surcharges. 5,000-point stopovers. 6-segment mixed-partner itineraries. Lap infants for 2,500 points. Family pooling. Amex MR 1:1. It is not the programme for everyday UK earning. It is the programme you deploy when you need Star Alliance to actually work.
