Skyteam partner airlines

Smaller SkyTeam airlines extend the alliance beyond major global carriers, adding regional coverage, niche routes and secondary hubs that improve redemption options and routing flexibility across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

SkyTeam Partner Airlines

Most UK travellers anchor their SkyTeam strategy around three programmes: Virgin Atlantic, Flying Blue, and Delta. These handle the transatlantic corridor and European hub connections. But the wider alliance — Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, Aeromexico, Kenya Airways, and others — is what makes complex itineraries actually bookable.

These airlines are not loyalty homes. They are routing infrastructure. They fill geographic gaps, provide the final connecting segment, and unlock destinations that the big three do not serve directly. When a redemption fails because Virgin or AF-KLM does not fly where you need to go, the answer is usually a SkyTeam partner.

✦ THE PRINCIPLE

Earn and hold status in one programme (Virgin, Flying Blue, or Delta). Use the wider alliance purely as the operational layer that completes itineraries and expands availability. SkyTeam status carries across every member airline — lounge access, priority boarding, and baggage benefits remain intact regardless of which carrier you are flying.

Korean Air — East Asia and Beyond

Korean Air is the most important SkyTeam partner for premium travel to Asia. Its Seoul Incheon hub connects to virtually every major city in East and Southeast Asia, plus Australia. Named World’s Best Airline by AirlineRatings.com in 2025, Korean Air’s product — particularly its Business Class Apex Suites — is among the best in the industry.

Why it matters for UK travellers: Korean Air operates London Heathrow to Seoul direct. Its Incheon hub then connects to Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei, Bangkok, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Sydney, and dozens more. For destinations across Asia, Korean Air via Seoul is a serious alternative to Cathay via Hong Kong or JAL via Tokyo.

Booking: Korean Air flights are bookable via Flying Blue miles (dynamic pricing — from 89,000 one-way in Business via CDG, but can surge to 500,000+), via Virgin Points (distance-based, ~100,000 VP LHR–Seoul one-way in Business), and via SKYPASS (fixed chart, 75,000 miles one-way in Business from Europe). Award availability in Business is limited — Korean Air releases 1-2 premium seats per flight and they disappear quickly. Economy availability is much better.

The Asiana merger: Korean Air is completing its merger with Asiana Airlines through 2026. Asiana Club members will transition to SKYPASS. The combined network will be the largest in East Asia.

★ THE KOREAN AIR CATCH

Business class award availability on Korean Air is notoriously scarce via partner programmes. It appears intermittently — sometimes via Virgin Atlantic or Flying Blue, sometimes only via SKYPASS directly. Availability can appear and disappear from partner search engines. If Korean Air Business is your target, check multiple programmes and be prepared to book instantly when seats appear. Economy availability is much more generous.

Vietnam Airlines — Southeast Asia Depth

Vietnam Airlines provides SkyTeam’s deepest coverage of Southeast Asia beyond the standard Bangkok–Singapore corridor. Its hubs at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City connect to domestic Vietnamese cities, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and regional destinations that AF-KLM does not serve.

Why it matters: If your destination is Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Siem Reap, Luang Prabang, or any Vietnamese city beyond the two main hubs, Vietnam Airlines is typically the connecting segment that makes the itinerary work. London–Paris–Hanoi on Air France, then Hanoi–Da Nang on Vietnam Airlines, creates a complete SkyTeam itinerary.

Product: Vietnam Airlines operates 787 Dreamliners on long-haul with a decent Business Class (lie-flat on 787). The regional product is more basic but functional. The airline has improved considerably and is now a 4-star Skytrax carrier.

Booking: Bookable via Flying Blue miles and Virgin Points. Surcharges are moderate. Award availability is reasonable on regional sectors.

Aeromexico — Latin America Gateway

Aeromexico’s Mexico City hub is SkyTeam’s primary gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. It connects to destinations across Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, and Peru — regions where AF-KLM and Delta have limited direct coverage.

Why it matters: If your destination is south of the US, Aeromexico via Mexico City frequently completes itineraries that start with Delta or Air France getting you across the Atlantic. Mexico City is also a compelling stopover destination in its own right.

Product: Aeromexico’s 787 Business Class (lie-flat, 1-2-1) on long-haul is solid. The airline has invested significantly in its premium product. Short-haul within Mexico and Central America is more functional.

Booking: Bookable via Flying Blue and Delta SkyMiles. Award availability is generally reasonable. Surcharges are moderate.

Kenya Airways — East Africa

Kenya Airways is SkyTeam’s primary African carrier. Its Nairobi hub connects to destinations across East, West, and Southern Africa — Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Entebbe, Kigali, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lagos, Accra, and more.

Why it matters: Africa is SkyTeam’s weakest continent by direct coverage. Kenya Airways fills the gap. London–Amsterdam–Nairobi on KLM, then Nairobi–Kilimanjaro on Kenya Airways, creates a complete African safari itinerary on SkyTeam metal.

The sweet spot: Kenya Airways has minimal surcharges when booked via Flying Blue. This makes it one of the best-value Flying Blue partner redemptions — particularly for East African destinations where cash fares are high.

Booking: Bookable via Flying Blue miles (best value due to low surcharges) and Delta SkyMiles. KLM codeshares on many Kenya Airways routes, so availability may show via KLM searches.

China Eastern — Chinese Domestic Network

China Eastern provides SkyTeam’s deepest coverage of mainland China. Its Shanghai hub connects to virtually every Chinese city — critical when your destination is not Beijing or Shanghai but a secondary city like Chengdu, Kunming, Xi’an, or Guilin.

Why it matters: If you are travelling within China beyond the two main gateways, China Eastern’s domestic network is the connecting layer. London–Shanghai on China Eastern or AF-KLM, then domestic onward, creates a complete itinerary.

Booking: Award availability can be inconsistent via partner programmes. Check Flying Blue and Delta SkyMiles. Surcharges vary.

SAS (Scandinavian Airlines)

SAS joined SkyTeam in September 2024 after leaving Star Alliance. Its Scandinavian hubs (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo) provide excellent European connectivity and short-haul coverage across the Nordics and Baltic region.

Why it matters: SAS short-haul flights bookable via Flying Blue can be excellent value — from 5,000 EuroBonus points for short European sectors. For UK travellers, SAS provides efficient connections to Scandinavia and beyond via Copenhagen.

Booking: SAS flights are bookable via Flying Blue miles, SAS EuroBonus (its own programme), and other SkyTeam partners.

Other Members

China Airlines: Taiwan-based, strong regional coverage across East Asia. Taipei hub connects to Japan, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Useful when Korean Air or Vietnam Airlines do not serve your specific route.

Middle East Airlines (MEA): Links Beirut to Europe and the Middle East. Niche but useful for Levant destinations.

Saudia: Saudi Arabian flag carrier. Jeddah and Riyadh hubs. Relevant for Hajj/Umrah travel and Saudi Arabia destinations.

Garuda Indonesia: Deep Indonesian domestic coverage beyond Bali. If your destination is Java, Sulawesi, or eastern Indonesia, Garuda completes the itinerary.

ITA Airways: Italy’s new flag carrier (successor to Alitalia). Note: ITA is in the process of being acquired by Lufthansa and is expected to transition to Star Alliance — its long-term SkyTeam membership is uncertain.

TAROM: Romanian flag carrier. Bucharest hub with regional Eastern European coverage.

How to Book Partner Flights

Book via Strengths Limitations
Flying Blue Broadest partner search. Low surcharges on Kenya Airways. Promo Rewards can apply Dynamic pricing — can surge on popular routes. 24-month expiry
Virgin Points Distance-based, predictable pricing. Never expire. Good for Korean Air when available Not all partners show on Virgin’s search. Some routes require phone booking
Delta SkyMiles Never expire. Can see some partner availability that others miss Dynamic pricing. Often most expensive option. Hard to earn from UK
Korean Air SKYPASS Fixed award chart. Best availability on KE own flights. Round-trip pricing can be competitive Partner awards require round-trip. Hard to earn from UK. Fuel surcharges on some partners
✓ THE BOTTOM LINE

SkyTeam’s partner airlines are not where you earn or hold status — they are where redemptions become complete. Korean Air unlocks East Asia via Seoul. Vietnam Airlines completes Southeast Asia. Aeromexico opens Latin America. Kenya Airways connects East Africa with minimal surcharges. SAS adds Scandinavia. Keep your earning and status in one primary programme, then use the full alliance as a routing engine. That is when SkyTeam works as a system.
