Turkish Airlines
Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline in the world. Its Istanbul hub sits at the intersection of Europe, Asia, and Africa — enabling one-stop access to destinations that other alliances need two or three connections to reach. Central Asia, secondary African cities, the Caucasus, and parts of the Middle East become bookable with a single structured transfer.
For UK travellers, Turkish matters for two reasons: its Miles&Smiles programme has a fixed partner award chart with some of the lowest Business Class pricing in Star Alliance, and Istanbul is one of the world’s best stopover cities — available free on award tickets.
Europe to Middle East in partner Business Class: 45,000 miles one-way. Europe to East Asia: 60,000–90,000 miles. Free Istanbul stopover on international awards. Two-year status validity. UK departures from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Gatwick. Fixed award chart — no dynamic pricing surprises.
The Istanbul Hub
Istanbul Airport (IST) is Turkish Airlines’ mega-hub — one of the world’s largest airports, opened in 2019, designed to handle 200 million passengers annually. Turkish operates 340+ destinations from Istanbul, more than any carrier from any single hub.
From the UK: Direct flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. Multiple daily frequencies from LHR. This means you do not need to position to Heathrow — regional departures feed directly into the Istanbul hub.
Where Istanbul unlocks: Central Asia (Almaty, Tashkent, Bishkek, Baku), Africa (Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Lagos, Accra, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg — and dozens of secondary cities), Middle East (Beirut, Amman, Erbil, Muscat), Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia. Many of these destinations are poorly served by Western European hubs.
Connections: Istanbul’s transfer banks are well-timed — arrivals from Europe connect into Africa/Asia departures with 90-minute to 3-hour connections. The airport’s SkyPriority and CIP Lounge infrastructure makes connections comfortable for status holders.
Miles&Smiles: The Award Chart
Miles&Smiles uses a fixed, region-based award chart for both Turkish-operated and partner flights. This is a significant advantage — pricing is predictable and does not surge dynamically like United MileagePlus or Lufthansa Miles & More.
Partner award pricing (one-way, selected routes)
| Route | Economy | Business | Example partners |
|---|---|---|---|
| Within Europe | 15,000 | 25,000 | Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian |
| Europe–Middle East | 25,000 | 45,000 | EgyptAir, Ethiopian |
| Europe–North America | 40,000 | 85,000–90,000 | United, Air Canada |
| Europe–East Asia | 40,000 | 80,000–90,000 | ANA, Singapore, Thai |
| Europe–Africa | 30,000–40,000 | 50,000–70,000 | Ethiopian, South African |
| US domestic (under 500 miles) | 7,500 | 12,500 | United |
Pricing is segment-based for Turkish-operated flights but region-based for most partners. After devaluations in 2024 and 2025, these rates are still competitive — particularly Europe–Middle East/Africa in Business. US domestic at 7,500 miles is one of the cheapest partner awards in any programme.
Free Istanbul stopover
Miles&Smiles allows a free stopover in Istanbul on international award tickets. Fly London–Istanbul (2 nights exploring the city)–Bangkok on a single award ticket. Same miles as flying direct. Istanbul is a world-class stopover destination — and this feature is a genuine differentiator over most competing programmes.
Earning Miles&Smiles from the UK
Miles&Smiles is not an Amex MR transfer partner in the UK. Earning options are more limited than Avios or Flying Blue, but not impossible:
Credit flights: Fly any Star Alliance airline and credit to Miles&Smiles. Earning rates vary by airline and fare class — generally distance-based with cabin multipliers.
Transfer partners: Citi ThankYou (US), Capital One (US), Bilt Rewards (US) all transfer 1:1. For UK residents, direct transfer options are limited.
Buy miles: Turkish periodically sells miles with bonuses. Can be cost-effective if you have a specific high-value redemption in mind.
Credit card workaround: Earn Amex MR → transfer to Aeroplan or KrisFlyer → book Star Alliance flights through those programmes. Not the same as Miles&Smiles, but accesses the same partner flights at different pricing.
Status: Two-Year Validity
| Tier | Miles required | Star Alliance | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Plus | 25,000 | Silver | 2 years |
| Elite | 40,000 | Gold | 2 years |
| Elite Plus | 80,000 | Gold | 2 years |
Two-year status validity is a significant advantage. Most programmes require annual requalification. Turkish gives you twice the runway — reach Elite (Star Alliance Gold) once, and you keep lounge access for two full years. For travellers who fly irregularly but intensively, this is more sustainable than programmes requiring annual renewal.
Elite at 40,000 miles = Star Alliance Gold with lounge access. Achievable with 2-3 long-haul Business returns credited to Miles&Smiles. The threshold is moderate — not the cheapest route to Star Alliance Gold (Aegean and Lufthansa match are easier), but the two-year validity makes it more maintainable.
Turkish Business Class
Turkish has invested heavily in its long-haul Business Class. The 787-9 and A350 feature staggered 1-2-1 seats with direct aisle access. The 777-300ER has a popular 2-3-2 layout on some aircraft — check seat maps before booking, as configurations vary. Food is a genuine highlight — Turkish catering is consistently rated among the best in European airline Business Class.
The Turkish CIP Lounge at Istanbul Airport is one of the world’s largest airline lounges — 5,000+ sq m, à la carte dining, extensive food stations, quiet zones, showers, golf simulator, and movie theatre. Accessible to Business Class passengers and Star Alliance Gold members.
Who Turkish Suits
Destinations beyond Western hubs
Central Asia, Africa, the Caucasus, secondary Middle East cities. If your destination is not well-served from Frankfurt, Paris, or Amsterdam, Istanbul probably connects to it directly.
Fixed-chart predictability
If you dislike dynamic pricing surprises, Miles&Smiles’ fixed partner chart means you know the cost before you search. Europe–Middle East Business at 45,000 miles. No demand surges.
UK regional travellers
Departures from Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh direct to Istanbul. No Heathrow positioning required. This is a genuine advantage for travellers outside London who want one-stop global access.
Less suited for…
Casual UK collectors without US transfer partners. Travellers who want online booking ease (phone booking often required for partners, customer service can be slow). Those targeting US East Coast nonstop (Turkish does not fly LHR–US).
Turkish Airlines combines the world’s most connected hub with a fixed partner award chart and two-year status validity. Europe–Middle East Business at 45,000 miles. US domestic at 7,500. Free Istanbul stopover. Star Alliance Gold for two years at 40,000 miles. The programme is harder to earn into from the UK than Avios or Flying Blue, but its redemption value and routing reach — particularly to Central Asia, Africa, and the Middle East — fill gaps that no other alliance can match.
