oneworld Lounges

Galleries at T5, Cathay's Pier in Hong Kong, Qatar's Al Mourjan in Doha, and Qantas First in Sydney. What each oneworld status tier actually gets you — and which lounges are worth arriving early for.

oneworld Lounges for UK Travellers

oneworld Sapphire and Emerald status unlock access to 600+ lounges worldwide — in any cabin, including Economy. For UK travellers, the practical value depends on which airports you use, which terminal you depart from, and whether your status is Sapphire or Emerald.

This guide covers the lounges you will actually encounter at the airports that matter most — Heathrow, Gatwick, and the key European and US hubs where UK travellers connect.

✦ THE ACCESS RULES

Sapphire: Business Class lounges + 1 guest (both must be on a oneworld flight that day). Emerald: First Class + Business Class lounges + 1 guest. Both tiers access lounges regardless of cabin — you can fly Economy and still enter. The flight must be both marketed and operated by a oneworld airline.

London Heathrow

Heathrow is where oneworld status delivers the most for UK travellers. With 13 oneworld lounges across three terminals, the options are extensive — but which ones you can use depends on your terminal and tier.

Terminal 5 (BA hub)

Lounge Sapphire Emerald Notes
BA Galleries (multiple) Several locations across T5 and satellites
BA Galleries First Emerald only. Quieter, better drinks
Concorde Room BA Gold only* *BA Gold flying Business or First on BA long-haul. Not open to other Emerald members
The First Wing Dedicated check-in and fast security. Emerald only

Terminal 3 (Cathay, AA, Qantas, JAL, BA long-haul)

Lounge Sapphire Emerald Notes
Cathay Pacific First Outstanding. À la carte dining, champagne. The best Emerald lounge at LHR
Cathay Pacific Business Solid lounge, noodle bar
Qantas London Lounge Good food, barista coffee
BA Galleries / BA First ✓ / Emerald only BA also operates in T3 for some routes
AA Admirals Club / First ✓ / Emerald only AA International First lounge for Emerald

Terminal 3 is where Emerald status shines brightest at Heathrow. The Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge is widely considered one of the best oneworld lounges in Europe — and it is accessible to any Emerald member flying any oneworld airline from T3, even in Economy.

Terminal 4 (Qatar)

Qatar operates from T4 but oneworld status does not access the Qatar Premium Lounge — that is for ticketed Qatar premium cabin passengers only. Sapphire and Emerald members on Qatar flights can use designated contract lounges.

London Gatwick

BA operates from the South Terminal. Sapphire and Emerald members departing on BA or oneworld flights can access the BA Galleries Lounge. Options are more limited than Heathrow, but the lounge exists and is usable.

Key European Hubs

Madrid (MAD)

Iberia Velázquez and Dalí lounges in T4S. Sapphire and Emerald access. Strong lounges for connecting to Latin America.

Helsinki (HEL)

Finnair Business Lounge (Sapphire+). Finnair Platinum Wing for Emerald. Recently renovated. Good for Asia connections via Helsinki.

Amsterdam (AMS)

oneworld branded lounge (Lounge 40). One of only two oneworld-branded lounges globally. Sapphire and Emerald access.

Paris CDG

Contract lounges for oneworld carriers in T1. Note: Air France lounges in T2 are SkyTeam, not oneworld — accessible only if flying AF/KLM or SkyTeam.

Key US Gateways

New York JFK (T8)

AA/BA shared lounges: Greenwich (Sapphire), Soho (Emerald). Chelsea Lounge is excluded from oneworld access — BA Gold/First tickets only. Admirals Club also available for Sapphire+.

Los Angeles LAX (TBIT)

Qantas First Class Lounge — one of the best in the world. Emerald only. AA Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club for Sapphire+.

Dallas, Miami, Chicago

AA Admirals Clubs and Flagship Lounges. Sapphire and Emerald from non-US programmes get domestic access — AA’s own elites do not.

★ THE US DOMESTIC ADVANTAGE

If you hold oneworld Sapphire or Emerald through a non-US programme (BA, Qatar, Finnair, Royal Jordanian etc.), you get lounge access on US domestic flights — including Admirals Clubs and Flagship Lounges. AA’s own AAdvantage and Alaska Atmos elites do not get domestic lounge access. This makes a non-US Sapphire match (e.g. Royal Jordanian at $149) more valuable for US domestic travel than AA’s own Platinum status.

Notable Emerald-Only Lounges Worldwide

Cathay First HKG

The Pier. Widely considered the world’s best airline lounge

Qantas First SYD

À la carte dining, spa, Neil Perry menu

Qantas First LAX

Exceptional. Full restaurant, spa

Finnair Platinum Wing HEL

Sauna, quiet space, excellent coffee

JAL First NRT/HND

Japanese hospitality, sushi bar

Cathay First LHR T3

Best Emerald lounge in Europe. À la carte

What Is Excluded

Not everything with a premium label is accessible via oneworld status. Key exclusions for UK travellers:

Concorde Room (LHR T5): BA Gold flying Business or First on BA long-haul only. Not open to other Emerald members.

Chelsea Lounge (JFK T8): BA Gold or First Class ticket only. Not part of oneworld access policy.

Qatar Al Safwa (DOH): First Class ticket only. No status access.

Qatar Al Mourjan (DOH): Business Class ticket or Qatar Platinum only. Not open to other Emerald members.

AA Flagship First Dining: First Class ticket only. Emerald does not qualify.

Arrivals lounges: Excluded from oneworld access policy globally.

Qantas Domestic Business Lounges (Australia): Excluded for Sapphire. Emerald can access.

✓ THE BOTTOM LINE

Sapphire unlocks 600+ Business Class lounges worldwide — the functional sweet spot for most UK travellers. Emerald adds First Class lounges, including the exceptional Cathay First in Hong Kong and at LHR T3, Qantas First in Sydney and LAX, and the Finnair Platinum Wing in Helsinki. For Heathrow, Terminal 3 is where Emerald status delivers the most. Terminal 5 has more BA lounges but fewer true First Class options beyond Galleries First. qatar

Qatar

Qatar Privilege Club is not just another Avios account. It is a parallel redemption engine that expands long-haul availability, reduces cash costs and makes premium routing via Doha far more achievable.
iberia

Iberia

Iberia and Iberia Plus form a joint airline-loyalty ecosystem within Avios, earning and redeeming across Iberia, British Airways and partners, often delivering strong value on off-peak long-haul and lower-surcharge redemptions.

BA vs oneworld Alternatives

Finnair, Qatar, Iberia, and the $149 status match. When BA still makes sense, when moving delivers the same benefits for less, and how to use both.

Fastest path to Sapphire

The fastest path to oneworld Sapphire isn’t always through your home airline. Qualification speed depends on fare types, routing and programme structure — not just how often you fly.

Have changes made Status irrelevant?

Single-programme loyalty no longer reflects how oneworld and Avios actually work. The most effective travellers now spread earning, status and redemption across multiple schemes — treating airline loyalty as strategy, not identity.

Where to credit flights

Where you credit a flight can materially change your Avios return. Earning models differ, status matters, and balances can be moved later — making each flight a strategic crediting decision.
