Delta SkyMiles for UK Travellers
The general rule is clear: book Delta flights using Virgin Points, not SkyMiles. Virgin’s distance-based pricing is almost always cheaper than SkyMiles’ dynamic pricing for the same seat. But “almost always” is not “always.” There are specific scenarios where SkyMiles deliver value that Virgin Points cannot — and UK travellers who hold a SkyMiles balance (from past flying, Amex transfers, or buying miles during promotions) should know when to deploy them.
This article is not about whether to build a SkyMiles balance from scratch (you probably should not). It is about when to use one you already have — and the handful of situations where SkyMiles genuinely beats Virgin Points.
Virgin Points is cheaper than SkyMiles for Delta flights in the vast majority of cases. Delta One LHR–JFK: 47,500 VP vs 115,000+ SkyMiles. US domestic: 7,500 VP vs 10,000–60,000+ SkyMiles. Always check Virgin Points first. Only use SkyMiles when one of the specific exceptions below applies.
When SkyMiles Beats Virgin Points
1. SkyMiles flash sales and price drops
Delta’s dynamic pricing occasionally produces anomalies — transatlantic Economy for 15,000–20,000 SkyMiles, or domestic flights for 5,000–8,000. These flash prices undercut even Virgin Points’ distance chart. They appear unpredictably and disappear quickly. If you spot one, SkyMiles wins.
2. Partner awards not available via Virgin
SkyMiles can book Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Aeromexico, and other SkyTeam partners. Some partner availability appears on delta.com that does not show on virginatlantic.com. If you find partner seats via SkyMiles that Virgin cannot see, SkyMiles is the only option.
3. Virgin Atlantic Upper Class via SkyMiles
SkyMiles can book Virgin Atlantic flights. While Virgin Points is usually cheaper for Virgin’s own metal, SkyMiles occasionally prices Upper Class competitively — particularly on less popular routes or shoulder season dates. Worth a quick check if you hold SkyMiles.
4. Delta Premium Select (Premium Economy)
Virgin Points cannot book Delta Premium Select on any route. SkyMiles can. If you specifically want Delta’s transatlantic Premium Economy — a significant step up from Main Cabin on long-haul — SkyMiles is the only points option.
5. Burning an orphan balance
SkyMiles never expire. If you have a balance sitting from years of crediting flights to Delta, use it. Even at dynamic prices, it is better than letting the miles sit unused indefinitely. Short domestic hops at 10,000–15,000 SkyMiles are reasonable value for clearing a balance.
This is the most commonly missed exception. Virgin Points cannot book Delta Premium Select — only Economy and Delta One. If you want Premium Economy on a Delta transatlantic flight, your only points option is SkyMiles. For travellers who find Delta One too expensive in miles but want more than Main Cabin, this gap matters.
Earning SkyMiles from the UK
SkyMiles are hard to accumulate from the UK without US credit cards. The realistic options:
| Method | How it works | UK relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Credit flights to SkyMiles | Earn 5 SkyMiles per $1 on Delta tickets. Partner flights earn distance-based percentages | Only useful if you choose SkyMiles over VP for crediting. Usually VP is better |
| Amex MR transfer | 1:1 transfer from UK Amex MR to SkyMiles | Available but almost always better to transfer to VP instead |
| Buy SkyMiles during sales | Delta sells miles periodically with 60-100% bonuses. Cost can drop to 1.0-1.7¢ per mile | Worth considering if you have a specific high-value redemption in mind |
| Marriott Bonvoy transfer | Bonvoy points transfer to SkyMiles (not at a great rate) | Rarely worthwhile unless topping up a balance for a specific booking |
The honest assessment: most UK travellers should not actively try to build a SkyMiles balance. The earning routes are limited, the redemption rates are dynamic, and Virgin Points prices the same flights for less. SkyMiles is a secondary currency — useful when you have it, not worth chasing.
The Crediting Decision: SkyMiles vs Virgin Points
Every time you fly Delta (or a SkyTeam partner), you choose which programme to credit. This decision affects both your redeemable balance and your status progression. The trade-offs:
| Credit to SkyMiles | Credit to Virgin Points | |
|---|---|---|
| Redeemable miles earned | 5 SkyMiles per $1 on Delta tickets (base rate) | Distance-based: e.g. LHR–JFK earns ~3,450 VP in Economy |
| Status earning | Earns MQDs toward Medallion status | Earns Tier Points toward Flying Club Silver/Gold |
| Expiry | SkyMiles never expire | Virgin Points never expire |
| Best for UK traveller? | Only if pursuing Delta Medallion status (requires high US spend) | Usually — earns toward Virgin Gold (SkyTeam Elite Plus) and VP are more useful for most bookings |
For most UK travellers, crediting to Virgin Points is the stronger choice. It earns Tier Points toward Flying Club status (which is UK-focused and card-spend-assisted), and the Virgin Points earned are more useful for future bookings since VP prices Delta flights cheaper than SkyMiles does. Credit to SkyMiles only if you are actively pursuing Delta Medallion status — which requires substantial spending on Delta-marketed flights, typically only practical for frequent US-based travellers or those with US Delta credit cards.
SkyMiles Sweet Spots Worth Knowing
If you hold a SkyMiles balance, these are the redemptions where SkyMiles delivers genuine value rather than just acceptable value:
Virgin Upper Class to London
SkyMiles can book Virgin Atlantic Upper Class. Availability is better than you might expect — Delta sees Virgin inventory that does not always appear on virgin.com. Cash prices for Upper Class regularly exceed £2,000 one-way. If SkyMiles prices it at 50,000–75,000, the value per mile is strong.
Delta One transcontinental (JFK–LAX/SFO)
Lie-flat Business on Delta’s A321neo. Cash fares regularly £500–1,200. SkyMiles pricing at saver level can hit 30,000–40,000 one-way. Virgin Points prices this at ~25,000 (still cheaper), but SkyMiles is acceptable if you have a balance and VP availability is gone.
Air France La Première via SkyMiles
SkyMiles can book Air France First Class on routes where it is offered (JFK–CDG, LAX–CDG). Availability is extremely scarce but when it appears, the redemption value is outstanding. Check delta.com periodically. This is an aspirational target rather than a plannable booking.
Korean Air Business via SkyMiles
Korean Air’s Apex Suite Business Class is excellent. SkyMiles can sometimes see Korean Air award availability that neither Virgin Points nor Flying Blue can access. Check delta.com for Korea-bound itineraries — particularly connecting through Korean Air’s Seoul Incheon hub.
Aeromexico Business to Latin America
Aeromexico’s 787 Business Class (1-2-1 lie-flat) to Mexico City and onward to Central/South America. SkyMiles pricing can be reasonable, and availability via SkyMiles sometimes exceeds what other programmes show. Mexico City is also a strong stopover destination.
SkyMiles + Cash
Delta allows you to combine miles and cash on the same booking — paying partially in SkyMiles and partially in cash. This can be useful for clearing a small balance when you do not have enough for a full award. Not available via Virgin Points for the same Delta flights.
Sky Clubs: Access for UK Travellers
Delta operates 50+ Sky Club lounges across the US. Access rules for UK-based travellers:
Flying Delta One: Sky Club access at departure airport.
Virgin Atlantic Gold (SkyTeam Elite Plus): Sky Club access on international itineraries. Must hold a same-day boarding pass for international SkyTeam travel. One guest permitted.
Delta Medallion members in Economy/Comfort+: Cannot access Sky Clubs on international flights. Can access other SkyTeam partner lounges. This quirk only affects Delta-issued status.
Amex Platinum cardholders: Sky Club access when flying Delta on a same-day ticket. Subject to Delta’s access restrictions (guest policies tightened in recent years).
The best Sky Clubs for UK travellers: JFK Terminal 4 (multiple locations, newest is excellent), Seattle (spacious, good food), Atlanta (multiple, varying quality), and LAX. At Heathrow, there is no Sky Club — Delta Medallion members use the Virgin Clubhouse, No1 Lounge, or Club Aspire depending on status level and cabin.
SkyMiles vs Virgin Points: The Comparison Table
| Route / Scenario | SkyMiles | Virgin Points | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| LHR–JFK Delta One | 115,000–350,000 | 47,500 | VP |
| LHR–JFK Delta Premium Select | 40,000–120,000 | Not bookable | SM (only option) |
| LHR–JFK Economy | 30,000–80,000 | ~20,000 | VP |
| US domestic short-haul | 10,000–30,000 | 7,500 | VP |
| SkyMiles flash sale domestic | 5,000–8,000 | 7,500 | SM (if available) |
| Korean Air Business via SkyTeam | Varies (may show availability VP cannot) | ~100,000 | Check both |
| Virgin Upper Class LHR–JFK | Varies (dynamic) | ~47,500 | VP (usually) |
Do not transfer Amex MR to SkyMiles unless you have confirmed a specific redemption where SkyMiles is cheaper or the only option (Premium Select, flash sale, partner availability). In all other cases, transfer to Virgin Points. If you already hold a SkyMiles balance from past flying, check SkyMiles pricing alongside Virgin Points before every Delta booking — dynamic pricing occasionally produces bargains. SkyMiles never expire, so there is no rush to spend them.
SkyMiles is not the currency UK travellers should build — it is the currency they should know how to use when they have it. Virgin Points beats SkyMiles on 90%+ of Delta bookings. The exceptions: Delta Premium Select (cannot book via VP), flash sales (occasional domestic bargains below 7,500), partner availability that VP cannot see, and clearing an existing balance. If you hold SkyMiles, check them alongside VP before every trip. If you do not hold SkyMiles, earn Virgin Points instead.
