Star Alliance for oneworld Members

Star Alliance is not a replacement for oneworld — it is the expansion pack. The December 2025 Avios devaluation widened the gap. Six worked examples showing where Aeroplan saves 25,000–58,000 Amex MR per trip, and

Star Alliance for oneworld Members

You hold BA Gold. You earn Avios. You fly oneworld. Why would you care about Star Alliance? Because oneworld cannot reach everywhere, its premium products are not always the best option, and a BA Gold holder can add Star Alliance Gold for €99 — unlocking 26 more airlines, a second lounge network, and redemptions that sometimes beat Avios by 50% or more.

This article is for UK travellers whose home is oneworld but who want to use Star Alliance strategically — without abandoning BA, Avios, or their existing loyalty structure.

✦ THE CORE IDEA

You do not have to choose between alliances. Keep BA for status, short-haul, and the companion voucher. Add Star Alliance for destinations oneworld cannot reach efficiently, for premium products BA cannot match, and for redemptions where Avios is poor value. The two systems complement rather than compete — especially after the December 2025 BA devaluation raised Avios costs 8-14% across the board with higher surcharges.

The December 2025 Avios Devaluation Changed the Maths

On 15 December 2025, BA raised Avios prices by 8-14% across all routes and cabins, while simultaneously increasing the cash surcharges on BA-operated flights. Economy was hit hardest in cash terms. Business Class surcharges rose by £10-25 per segment. The “fewer Avios, more cash” option — previously a good deal on short-haul — saw disproportionate cash increases, narrowing the gap between pricing options.

This matters for oneworld members considering Star Alliance because the price gap has widened. Routes where Avios was already poor value (Asia, Middle East, Africa) became even worse. Routes where Avios was competitive (short-haul Europe, transatlantic) saw smaller but still meaningful increases. Star Alliance alternatives via Aeroplan — where pricing has not changed and surcharges remain C$39 flat — are now comparatively better on almost every corridor.

What Star Alliance Adds That oneworld Lacks

Capability oneworld Star Alliance adds
Istanbul hub / Central Asia / Caucasus Limited (Royal Jordanian) Turkish Airlines — 340+ destinations, more countries than any carrier
Africa depth Royal Air Maroc (Casablanca hub) Ethiopian (60+ African cities), South African, EgyptAir
Singapore Suites / First Not bookable KrisFlyer only — double bed A380 Suites, world’s best First Class
Lufthansa First + FCT Not bookable Allegris First, Frankfurt First Class Terminal (separate building, Porsche transfer)
ANA First / “The Suite” Not bookable Enclosed private suite, Japanese hospitality
No-surcharge redemptions Qatar (low), BA (high surcharges) Aeroplan — C$39 flat fee on all partner flights
Stopovers on awards Not standard Aeroplan: 5,000 extra points. Turkish: free on awards via Istanbul
US domestic depth American Airlines United (7 hubs) + Air Canada — more secondary cities reachable

The €99 Play: Triple-Alliance Coverage

A BA Gold holder already has oneworld Emerald. Adding Star Alliance Gold and SkyTeam Elite Plus costs a combined €99:

Star Alliance Gold: Lufthansa Senator via €99 match. Valid to February 2027. Alliance-wide lounge access on 26 airlines. Fast track security and priority boarding across the network.

SkyTeam Elite Plus: Virgin Atlantic Gold via free match from BA Gold. Lounge access on 18 SkyTeam airlines.

Result: Lounge access on 60+ airlines worldwide. Priority services everywhere. €99 total. No ongoing flying requirement beyond what you already do for BA.

For a BA Silver holder: oneworld Sapphire (lounge access) + TAP Gold at €199 (Star Alliance Gold, full alliance-wide) + Virgin Gold free match (SkyTeam Elite Plus). Total: €199 for triple-alliance lounge access.

When to Use Star Alliance Instead of Avios

Middle East in Business

BA charges 160,000–180,000 Avios + £375. KrisFlyer charges ~74,000 miles return (~111,000 Amex MR) via Lufthansa or SWISS. Even at 3:2 Amex transfer, KrisFlyer saves roughly 50,000 Amex points and £375 in surcharges.

Southeast Asia in Business

BA to Bangkok: 120,000+ Avios + £375 surcharges. Aeroplan via Thai Airways: ~62,500 points + £25. Or KrisFlyer on SQ metal: ~73,500 + ~£250 for Singapore Airlines’ superior product. Both beat Avios on price.

Africa beyond Morocco/South Africa

oneworld’s Africa coverage is thin — Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca and limited Qantas codeshares. Ethiopian via Addis Ababa connects to 60+ African cities. Book via Aeroplan with no surcharges.

Japan in First Class

JAL First is bookable via Avios (80,000 AAdvantage miles). ANA First is bookable via ANA Mileage Club (~120,000 return, 1:1 Amex). Both are excellent — ANA’s enclosed suite product edges JAL for privacy. Having both alliances gives you both options.

Worked Examples: Avios vs Star Alliance (Post-Devaluation)

Route (one-way Business) BA Avios + taxes Best Star Alliance + taxes Saving (Amex MR)
LHR–Singapore 121,000 Avios + ~£330 62,500 Aeroplan + ~£25 (via LH/TG) 58,500 MR + £305
LHR–Dubai 80,000–90,000 Avios + ~£190 ~37,000 KF + low taxes (via LH, return) ~25,000 MR + £150+
LHR–New York 80,000 Avios + ~£375 (off-peak) 55,000 Aeroplan + ~£25 (via United) 25,000 MR + £350
LHR–Bangkok 110,000–121,000 Avios + ~£375 62,500 Aeroplan + ~£25 (via Thai) 48,000–58,500 MR + £350
LHR–Tokyo 110,000–121,000 Avios + ~£375 (via JAL) 62,500–70,000 Aeroplan + ~£25 (via ANA) 40,000–58,500 MR + £350
LHR–Nairobi (via Addis Ababa) Difficult on oneworld ~55,000 Aeroplan + ~£25 (Ethiopian) Route not viable on Avios

The pattern is clear: for long-haul Business Class, Aeroplan typically saves 25,000-58,000 Amex MR points and £200-375 in surcharges compared to BA Avios post-devaluation. The savings are largest on Asia routes where BA surcharges are highest and Aeroplan’s C$39 flat fee delivers the most dramatic contrast.

⚠ THE COMPANION VOUCHER EXCEPTION

The BA companion voucher (2-4-1) remains the single best-value redemption in any programme. LHR–New York return in Business for 2 people: 160,000 Avios + ~£750 (off-peak, 2-for-1). Via Aeroplan for 2 people: 220,000 points + ~£50. The companion voucher saves 60,000 Amex MR and the cash difference is covered by the voucher. If you have a valid companion voucher, BA wins on that specific booking. Star Alliance wins on everything else.

How to Earn Star Alliance Miles as a oneworld Member

You do not need to stop earning Avios. The strategy is to maintain your Avios earning and add Star Alliance capability through Amex MR flexibility.

KrisFlyer is the UK Amex bridge. The only direct UK Amex MR transfer to Star Alliance is KrisFlyer at 3:2. Use it for Singapore Airlines own flights and the Middle East sweet spot. Aeroplan and ANA Mileage Club are Amex partners in the US but not the UK — to use them, you need miles earned from flights, bought during sales, or transferred via Marriott Bonvoy (poor rate). For oneworld comparison: Amex MR transfers 1:1 to Avios, 1:1 to Flying Blue, and 3:2 to KrisFlyer from UK cards.

Never transfer speculatively. Keep points as Amex MR until you have a specific booking in mind. Search availability first, confirm the seat exists, then transfer and book immediately. Amex MR does not expire while the account is active. KrisFlyer miles expire in 36 months regardless.

Credit Star Alliance flights strategically. If you fly Lufthansa or SWISS for work, credit to your Miles & More account (active via €99 Senator match) to earn M&M miles and protect requalification. If it is a one-off Star Alliance flight and status is not relevant, credit to Aeroplan or KrisFlyer for redeemable miles. Do not credit Star Alliance flights to BA — the earning rates on partner airlines are typically poor.

Flights Where oneworld Still Wins

Star Alliance is not always the answer. Keep using Avios and oneworld when:

Short-haul Europe: BA Avios on BA short-haul remains excellent value — from 8,500 one-way off-peak in Business, low surcharges, flexible ticketing. Aeroplan short-haul starts at 7,500 but with C$39 fee and less convenient routing from UK.

Qatar QSuite: The world’s best Business Class. Bookable via Avios with reasonable surcharges via Qatar’s own programme. No Star Alliance equivalent at this level.

BA companion voucher: 2-for-1 on BA redemptions is unbeatable value on long-haul Business or First. No Star Alliance programme offers anything comparable.

Cathay Pacific: Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific via oneworld’s premium anchor. No Star Alliance alternative at Cathay’s service level on the HKG hub routes.

★ THE DECISION FRAMEWORK

For every trip, ask three questions: (1) Is there a oneworld option that works well on Avios? (2) Is there a Star Alliance option that works better on Aeroplan or KrisFlyer? (3) Which programme gives the lowest total cost in Amex MR points + cash taxes? The answer changes per trip. Having both alliances available via Amex MR gives you twice the routing options and twice the availability pool. The €99 Senator match means your Gold status covers both networks.

✓ THE BOTTOM LINE

Star Alliance is not a replacement for oneworld — it is the expansion pack. For €99, a BA Gold holder adds lounge access on 26 more airlines, unlocks Lufthansa First, Singapore Suites, and ANA First (none bookable via Avios), gains no-surcharge redemptions via Aeroplan, and fills routing gaps to Istanbul, Africa, Central Asia, and secondary US cities. Keep BA for the companion voucher, short-haul Avios, and QSuite. Add Star Alliance for everything oneworld cannot reach or where Avios is poor value. Amex MR is the bridge — same points pool, transferred to whichever programme delivers the best deal per trip.
