The Hilton Panama is a large, modern property on Balboa Avenue with spectacular Pacific views, four restaurants, and a rooftop pool. Here's an honest review for points travellers.
Hilton Panama Review — Hilton Honors Points Guide | Points Travel Pro

Hilton Panama

The Hilton Panama occupies a 30-floor tower on Avenida Balboa, Panama City’s main waterfront boulevard. It is a large, modern convention-style hotel — 347 rooms, four restaurants, a casino, a rooftop pool, and an eforea spa. On most objective measures it outperforms the nearby Waldorf Astoria Panama: it is newer, better maintained, and has more facilities. The views from the upper floors across the Pacific are exceptional. And yet, as a stay, it left us wanting something the Waldorf, for all its maintenance issues, delivered more naturally.

We stayed over New Year, the same trip on which we stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Panama. The two hotels are a short walk from each other but feel like very different properties — which explains why comparing them directly is useful for anyone choosing between them.

Guest Sentiment
4.4 / 5  ·  2,156 reviews
Guests consistently praise the spectacular Pacific views from upper floors, the quality of the breakfast buffet, and the well-maintained rooms. The rooftop pool draws strong reviews for its panoramic setting. Critical feedback centres on the hotel’s large, convention-style atmosphere — some guests find it impersonal — and the lack of shade around the pool in Panama’s heat. Service consistency is occasionally flagged as variable during busy periods.

Location

The Avenida Balboa address is the Hilton Panama’s strongest card. The hotel sits directly on Panama City’s main waterfront boulevard, with the Cinta Costera — a long pedestrian and cycling promenade along the Pacific — immediately accessible. The views from upper floors across the bay and toward the Panama Canal shipping lanes are spectacular, particularly at dusk when the city skyline lights up against the water. The financial district and Multicentro mall are within easy walking distance.

The Waldorf Astoria Panama is a short walk away in the Marbella district — close enough that we stayed at both on the same trip and compared them directly. Despite the proximity, the two hotels feel like different worlds: the Hilton is on a busy waterfront boulevard with an open, commercial character, while the Waldorf sits in a quieter residential and restaurant strip. Casco Viejo, the colonial old town, is a short taxi ride away and worth an evening visit from either hotel.

Rooms

The rooms are modern, well maintained, and spacious by city hotel standards. Higher floors deliver the views that justify the Hilton’s premium positioning — floor-to-ceiling windows looking out across the Pacific are a genuine highlight, and the difference between a city view and an ocean view room is significant. The beds are consistently praised in guest reviews and our experience matched that — the sleep quality here is very good. Air conditioning, premium bedding, balconies, and 24-hour room service are standard throughout.

The overall impression is of a large, well-run business hotel that has been well maintained since opening. There are none of the maintenance issues that characterise the nearby Waldorf Astoria. What it lacks in comparison is intimacy and character — the scale of the property means it can feel impersonal, particularly during busy periods, and the noise levels that come with a 347-room convention hotel are noticeable.

Dining

The dining offering is extensive. The breakfast buffet is a genuine strength — a wide spread that includes made-to-order omelettes, hot options, fresh fruit, and good coffee. For Gold and Diamond Hilton Honors members, breakfast is included and represents strong value given the quality. The food quality across the restaurants is generally well regarded and the overall food and beverage offering is a strong point for the property. Emotions Dinner Theater offers a full dinner with live entertainment — not quite Las Vegas, but an enjoyable evening out that is worth booking in advance.

The pool bar provides a more casual option during the day and the variety of four restaurants gives more choice than most hotels in this category.

Pool and Facilities

The rooftop pool delivers on the view — the Pacific panorama is the best of any hotel pool we have encountered in Panama City, and one of the better hotel pool views we have seen anywhere. On a clear day the ships queuing for the Panama Canal are visible in the distance. As a spectacle, it is hard to beat.

The practical limitation is shade — or the lack of it. In Panama City’s heat and humidity, a pool area without meaningful shade is uncomfortable for extended periods. The Waldorf Astoria’s 7th floor pool, which is smaller and less dramatic, is better designed for actually spending time at in the midday sun. For an evening swim with a view, the Hilton’s rooftop is excellent. For a relaxed afternoon by the pool, it is a more challenging environment.

The gym is a genuine highlight — well equipped with a large selection of machines, well maintained, and one of the better hotel fitness centres we have used. The eforea Spa is a full-service offering with a comprehensive treatment menu. The casino is on-site for those who want it.

Hilton Honors — Earning and Elite Benefits

Benefit Notes
Award pricing Fully dynamic pricing within Hilton Honors. As a standard Hilton Hotels & Resorts property (rather than a luxury tier like the Waldorf), points requirements are generally lower than the Waldorf Astoria Panama for comparable dates. Check live rates on Hilton.com.
Breakfast (elite) Gold and Diamond members receive complimentary breakfast for the member and one additional guest. Given the quality of the buffet here, this is a meaningful benefit.
Executive lounge The Hilton Panama has an executive lounge accessible to Executive Room and suite guests, and Diamond members — an advantage over the Waldorf Astoria Panama, which has no lounge.
Room upgrade Gold and Diamond members eligible for space-available room upgrades at check-in. Given the significant difference between lower and upper floor views, requesting a high floor ocean view room is worthwhile.
Late checkout Diamond: 4pm (space-available). Gold: 2pm (space-available).
UK routes to Gold Hilton Honors Gold via Amex Platinum (card benefit) or the Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card (£150/year). Gold unlocks complimentary breakfast and upgrade eligibility.
★ ELITE TIP

The Hilton Panama has an executive lounge — unlike the Waldorf Astoria Panama — which gives Diamond members an additional benefit layer not available at the Waldorf. For Diamond members visiting Panama City, this tips the points calculation toward the Hilton if lounge access is a priority. For Gold members, both properties offer breakfast inclusion; the choice then comes down to atmosphere and room preference.

❖ POINTS TRAVEL PRO VERDICT

The Hilton Panama is objectively the stronger property. It is newer, better maintained, has more facilities, a superior gym, an executive lounge for Diamond members, and one of the best pool views in the city. On paper it wins the comparison with the Waldorf Astoria Panama decisively.

But it is a large, busy, convention-scale hotel, and that character pervades the stay. It is noisier, less intimate, and less suited to a relaxed few days than the Waldorf. The pool, for all its spectacular views, lacks the shade that Panama’s climate makes essential for extended outdoor time.

We stayed at both on the same trip and found ourselves preferring the Waldorf — which surprised us given the objective gap in maintenance and modernity. The right choice depends on what the visit is for. For business travel, a conference, or a Diamond member who values lounge access, the Hilton is the clear choice. For a relaxed leisure stay where atmosphere and pool comfort matter more than facilities count, the Waldorf edges it. Would be even better if management invested some time and money in some repairs.
