Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways Compared

Following Qatar Airways’ announcement of Privilege Club status extensions for members due for renewal, the other Gulf Airlines, Emirates and Etihad have now confirmed their own loyalty programme adjustments for members affected by the ongoing airspace disruptions. Each airline has taken a noticeably different approach — here is what each one is offering, what it means in practice, and what members should do now.

★ QUICK SUMMARY

Qatar Airways is extending tier status for members due for renewal, with full details still being confirmed. Emirates has paused tier downgrades and miles expiry until 30 June 2026. Etihad has reduced qualification thresholds by 25% for a full year until 31 March 2027.

Emirates Skywards

Emirates Skywards is the loyalty programme of Emirates and flydubai, with four membership tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Unlike programmes with fixed annual review dates, Emirates operates a rolling monthly tier review — status is assessed at the end of every month based on Tier Miles earned across the previous 12 months. This structure means that even a short period of reduced flying can affect a member’s rolling total relatively quickly, making the current protections particularly valuable for those who fly Emirates regularly.

Emirates is offering a combination of tier protection and miles expiry relief, covering Silver, Gold and Platinum members.

Tier review extension

If your Emirates Skywards tier review date falls between 31 March and 31 May 2026, your downgrade has been put on hold until 30 June 2026. If your tier review date has already passed and your benefits were due to expire by April 2026, those benefits have also been extended to 30 June 2026. This effectively pauses the rolling review process for affected members, giving additional time to rebuild Tier Miles once normal services resume.

Skywards Miles expiry

Any unredeemed Skywards Miles due to expire between 31 March and 31 May 2026 are now valid until 30 June 2026. This applies to miles held in individual accounts, as well as Skysurfers and My Family accounts. Emirates has also extended the validity of any miles that were spent on rewards subsequently cancelled due to the disruptions — those miles are reinstated and extended to 30 June 2026. Updated expiry dates will appear in your Emirates Skywards profile by the 30th of your original expiration month. Note that Platinum members’ miles do not expire for as long as they retain Platinum status, so this relief is most relevant to Silver and Gold members.

Platinum Privileges

For Platinum members, any activated discounted or complimentary cabin upgrades with validity falling between 31 March and 31 May 2026 can continue to be used until 30 June 2026. Members benefiting from the extended tier review period who have also activated the Tier Miles Rollover benefit can carry forward up to 50,000 Tier Miles earned during this period into their next Platinum tier cycle — a useful provision for high-frequency flyers who were actively building towards requalification before the disruption began.

Skywards+

Skywards+ is Emirates’ paid subscription product that sits alongside the standard membership structure, offering benefits such as airport lounge access and discounted Upgrade Rewards to members who may not hold elite tier status. Skywards+ packages and privileges expiring between 31 March and 31 May 2026 have been extended to 30 June 2026. Classic Reward Vouchers are also covered — even if the voucher has already been redeemed but could not be used due to the disruptions.

★ PTP TIP

Emirates’ extension window runs only to 30 June 2026. If disruptions continue beyond that point, members should monitor the programme for further updates. Emirates has previously extended protections during prolonged disruption periods, so additional relief is possible if circumstances require it.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Qatar Airways Privilege Club operates three elite tiers — Silver, Gold and Platinum — with status earned through Qpoints and Qmiles accumulated over a rolling 12-month period. Qatar suspended its scheduled operation on 28 February 2026 following the closure of Qatari airspace, and has been operating at significantly reduced capacity since, with estimates suggesting around 20% of its normal schedule as of mid-March 2026.

Qatar Airways CEO Hamad Al-Khater wrote directly to Privilege Club members confirming that tier status extensions would be implemented for all members whose status was due for renewal and may have been affected during this period. He confirmed that eligible members would be contacted individually by email with full details of their extension.

Reports indicate that members whose tier was due to expire in March 2026 have received an extension of approximately three months, though Qatar has not formally confirmed this duration in an official statement. Crucially, the extension applies only to members due for renewal during the disruption window — it is not a universal, programme-wide measure. Full details of which renewal periods are covered continue to emerge as Qatar contacts eligible members.

★ PTP TIP

Of the three programmes, Qatar’s response is the least clearly defined at this stage. If you hold Privilege Club status and have not received an email, it is worth logging into your account or contacting Qatar Airways directly to confirm whether your tier renewal date falls within the protected window.

Etihad Guest

Etihad Guest is the loyalty programme of Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, operating five tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald. Status is earned through Etihad Guest Tier Miles, accumulated on Etihad flights and a range of partner airline services. Etihad has taken a structurally different approach to the other two carriers — rather than pausing the clock or extending status, it has permanently lowered the qualification bar for an extended period.

Reduced qualification thresholds

From 18 March 2026, Etihad Guest members can qualify or requalify for Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers with 25% fewer Tier Miles than normally required. The reduced thresholds apply automatically to all eligible members globally — no registration or additional action is needed. The offer remains in place until 31 March 2027, giving members a full year in which to earn or retain status under the easier criteria.

The reduction applies to both retention of a current tier and progression to the next tier. Members can also move up multiple tiers during the offer period — for example, from Silver to Gold and then from Gold to Platinum — provided each upgrade is achieved on or before 31 March 2027. Once the offer period ends, standard qualification requirements revert to 100% of published thresholds.

Emerald tier is excluded from this reduction. Emerald is Etihad’s top tier, requiring significant spend thresholds, and has not been adjusted as part of this offer.

Some members have also reported being automatically upgraded to the next tier where they were already close to qualifying under the reduced thresholds, though Etihad has not formally confirmed the exact conditions under which automatic upgrades are applied.

★ PTP TIP

The 25% reduction applies within your existing 12-month rolling qualification period. Tier Miles must still include a minimum number earned from actual flights — the reduction lowers the overall threshold needed, but does not remove the flying requirement entirely.

How Do the Three Programmes Compare?

All three Gulf carriers have responded to the disruption, but each has structured its relief differently.

Airline Approach Duration & Tiers
Qatar Airways
Privilege Club
Status extension for members due for renewal during the disruption window — full details being communicated individually. Approx. 3 months (not formally confirmed). Members due for renewal only.
Emirates
Skywards
Tier downgrade pause and miles expiry extension to 30 June 2026. Until 30 June 2026. Silver, Gold, Platinum.
Etihad
Guest
25% reduction in qualification thresholds — auto-applied, covers both retention and progression. Until 31 March 2027. Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum (Emerald excluded).

Qatar’s response is the most limited in scope — targeted only at members due for renewal, with details still being communicated on a case-by-case basis. Emirates has taken a broader approach, protecting all Silver, Gold and Platinum members from downgrade and shielding miles from expiry through to the end of June. Etihad’s offer is the most structurally significant: rather than freezing the clock, it has actively lowered the bar for an entire year, which benefits not only those at risk of losing status but also members who want to move up a tier while the conditions are favourable.

What Should Members Do Now?

Emirates Skywards members

Log into your Emirates Skywards account and check your tier review date and miles expiry dates. If your review date falls between 31 March and 31 May 2026, confirm that your account reflects the extended date of 30 June 2026 — Emirates has said updated dates will appear in your profile by the 30th of your original expiration month. If you hold unused Classic Reward Vouchers or Skywards+ benefits that were affected by cancellations, check that these have been extended before attempting to rebook.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club members

Check your email for direct communication from Qatar Airways. If your tier was due for renewal during the disruption period and you have not yet received confirmation of an extension, log into your Privilege Club account to check your current status end date, or contact Qatar Airways customer service directly. Given that Qatar is managing this on a member-by-member basis rather than applying a blanket update, it is worth proactively confirming your position rather than assuming the extension has been applied.

Etihad Guest members

No action is required — the reduced thresholds have been applied automatically. However, it is worth logging into your Etihad Guest account to review your current Tier Miles balance and understand how close you are to qualifying or requalifying under the reduced thresholds. With a full year until 31 March 2027, there is genuine opportunity to either secure your current status with fewer miles, or to target the next tier up if you are within reach. Members who are new to Etihad Guest should note that Bronze status is granted automatically on sign-up, which means the reduced thresholds apply from day one of membership.

❖ POINTS TRAVEL PRO VERDICT

All three responses reflect a recognition that airlines cannot penalise their most loyal customers for not flying during a period of significant, externally-driven disruption. Etihad’s offer stands out for its duration and structural ambition — a full year of reduced thresholds creates a genuine window of opportunity, not just protection. Emirates provides solid short-term cover but members need to act before 30 June. Qatar’s response is the most cautious so far, though further details may follow. Whichever programme you hold status with, now is the time to log into your account, check the numbers, and understand exactly where you stand.
