Nectar American Express
The Nectar Credit Card from American Express sits in an unusual position in UK points travel. It does not earn Avios directly — it earns Nectar points, which convert to Avios at a rate of 400 Nectar points to 250 Avios. This sounds roundabout, but the card’s real value lies in the Nectar ecosystem itself: double and triple points at Sainsbury’s and Esso, Nectar eShops online bonuses, personalised Nectar Prices offers, and periodic conversion bonuses that improve the Avios rate. For Sainsbury’s-loyal households, the card turns weekly grocery shopping into a structured Avios earning stream. For everyone else, it is usually outperformed by direct Avios cards.

The Nectar-to-Avios Maths
At the base earn rate of 2 Nectar per £1, converting to Avios gives you 1.25 Avios per £1 (2 Nectar × 250/400 = 1.25 Avios). At Nectar partners earning 3 per £1, you get 1.875 Avios per £1. These rates are respectable — but the BA Amex Premium Plus earns 1.5 Avios per £1 directly, with no conversion step and a Companion Voucher on top. The Nectar card’s advantage only emerges when you factor in the Nectar-specific bonuses.
Periodically, Avios runs conversion bonuses of 10–25% extra when transferring from Nectar. During a 25% bonus, the base rate of 2 Nectar per £1 effectively becomes 1.5625 Avios per £1 — beating the BA Amex Premium Plus earn rate. Savvy collectors accumulate Nectar points and convert only during bonus periods, maximising the rate. These bonuses run several times per year but are not guaranteed.
The Sainsbury’s Advantage
The card’s strongest case is for households that spend heavily at Sainsbury’s. Using the Nectar Amex + Nectar loyalty card together at Sainsbury’s earns 3 Nectar per £1 (2 from the card + 1 base Nectar). A household spending £500/month at Sainsbury’s generates 18,000 Nectar per year from groceries alone — converting to 11,250 Avios at the base rate, or 14,000+ during a conversion bonus.
This stacks with Nectar Prices personalised offers in the Sainsbury’s app, Nectar Connect card-linked deals (which work alongside the Amex card’s own earning), and seasonal double/triple points promotions. In a good year, an active Sainsbury’s shopper can earn 30,000+ Nectar from the combination of card spend, loyalty card, and promotions — converting to 18,000–25,000 Avios depending on bonus timing.
The Nectar eShops online portal adds further earning at hundreds of online retailers. A purchase at a retailer offering 8 Nectar per £1 on the portal, paid with the Nectar Amex, earns 10 Nectar per £1 total (8 portal + 2 card). This stacking is where the card outperforms everything else in specific scenarios.
The Eligibility Problem
The Nectar Amex follows the same eligibility rule as Amex Gold: you must not have held any personal Amex in the previous 24 months. Critically, holding the Nectar Amex blocks you from receiving sign-up bonuses on Amex Gold (20,000 MR), Amex Platinum (50,000 MR), BA Amex (5,000–30,000 Avios), and Marriott Amex (20,000 Bonvoy points) for 24 months.
However, the reverse is important: holding the Nectar Amex does NOT block the BA Amex Premium Plus bonus, which only checks for “BA Amex in 24 months”. So a possible sequence is: Nectar Amex first (20,000 Nectar bonus) → BA Amex Premium Plus second (30,000 Avios bonus, since BA Amex has its own eligibility rule). But you would lose the Amex Gold bonus (20,000 MR) and Platinum bonus (50,000 MR) for 24 months — a substantial opportunity cost.
For most newcomers, the Amex Gold (20,000 MR, free Y1) is a better first card. The Nectar Amex works best for someone who has already collected the Gold and Platinum bonuses and is looking for a low-cost Amex to maintain while earning Nectar from grocery spending.
Applying for the Nectar Amex before Amex Gold or Platinum forfeits 70,000+ MR in sign-up bonuses. Unless you specifically value 20,000 Nectar (= 12,500 Avios) more than 20,000 MR (= 20,000 Avios) from Gold, the Nectar card should come later in your application sequence — or not at all if you plan to apply for Gold or Platinum within 24 months.
Year 2 and Beyond
After the free first year, the card costs £30/year. At 2 Nectar per £1, you need to spend £3,000 per year to earn 6,000 Nectar (= 3,750 Avios) from the card — the minimum to make the £30 fee worthwhile at ~1p/Avios valuations. Most households exceed this easily. The £30 fee is modest enough that the card is worth keeping as long as you shop at Sainsbury’s regularly and convert Nectar to Avios during bonus periods.
The card also receives Amex Offers cashback deals. These tend to be “lower tier” offers compared to Gold or Platinum (more JustEat/UberEats, fewer premium restaurant deals), but can still save £50–100/year — more than covering the £30 fee.
Who Should Get This Card
Yes, get this card if: You shop at Sainsbury’s regularly and want to maximise Nectar earning. You have already collected Amex Gold and Platinum bonuses (or are not interested in them). You value the flexibility of holding Nectar points and converting to Avios only during bonus periods.
Skip this card if: You have not yet applied for Amex Gold or Platinum — their sign-up bonuses are worth far more. You do not shop at Sainsbury’s or use Nectar partners. You want direct Avios earning without a conversion step.
Free Y1, then £30/year. Earns 2 Nectar per £1 general (3 at Sainsbury’s/Esso/Argos), converting at 400:250 to Avios (effectively 0.625–0.9375 Avios per £1 depending on earn tier). Periodic Avios conversion bonuses of 10–25% improve the rate substantially. 20,000 Nectar sign-up bonus (= 12,500 Avios). Strongest for Sainsbury’s-loyal households who stack card earning with Nectar Prices, eShops, and conversion bonuses. Weakest as a first Amex — it blocks Gold and Platinum bonuses worth 70,000+ MR. Apply only after collecting higher-value Amex bonuses.
