Star Alliance Status Matches
Star Alliance has more active status match routes than any other alliance. The Lufthansa €99 match, the TAP €199 match, Turkish’s challenge, Aegean’s lifetime pathway, the Marriott Bonvoy crossover, and the ITA Volare free transfer all give UK travellers ways into Star Alliance Gold without building status from scratch. Several can be stacked. Some recur seasonally. This article covers every current and recent route.
SAS left Star Alliance for SkyTeam in September 2024. This triggered a wave of matches as Star Alliance carriers competed to absorb former SAS EuroBonus members. BA’s ongoing status changes have produced a separate wave. The result: more routes to Star Alliance Gold right now than at any time in the past decade. Take advantage while they last.

1. Lufthansa €99 Match — The Default Choice
Who qualifies: BA Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Also Iberia Club and ITA Volare members. Virgin Atlantic members cannot participate.
What you get: BA Gold → Senator (Star Alliance Gold). BA Silver or Bronze → Frequent Traveller. Senator gets you alliance-wide lounge access, fast track security, and priority boarding across all Star Alliance carriers. Frequent Traveller only gets lounge access at Lufthansa Group lounges (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels, ITA) — no lounge access on United, Singapore, Turkish, or any other partner.
Validity: To 28 February 2027. To requalify, you need to meet standard Lufthansa requirements by end of 2026. At least 50% of qualifying points must come from Miles & More airlines (LH Group carriers). You cannot requalify purely from other Star Alliance flying.
Extension challenge: Credit 6 cash flights on LH Group carriers before the deadline and Senator extends by a further year. An easier 2-flight challenge exists for Frequent Traveller.
How to apply: Via the Miles & More status match website. Submit a screenshot from the BA app — not a photo of your card (photos get rejected based on 2025 experience). €99 fee. ITA Volare matches are free. Processing typically takes a few days.
BA Bronze has no lounge access at all. Matching to Frequent Traveller for €99 gives you Lufthansa Group lounge access — including the refurbished Lufthansa lounge at Heathrow T2 (capacity 350, open 5am–10pm). If you fly through Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, or Vienna with any regularity, this is a genuine upgrade from a tier that gives you virtually nothing at BA. Even 2-3 uses pays back the €99.
2. TAP Air Portugal €199 Match — The Silver Upgrade
Why this matters: Lufthansa gives BA Silver only Frequent Traveller (no alliance-wide lounges). TAP gives BA Silver holders full Star Alliance Gold — alliance-wide lounge access on all 26 member airlines. That is a fundamentally different level of benefit for just €100 more.
Who qualifies: BA Silver or above. Virgin Atlantic members not eligible. Offers appear periodically — not always open. When slots fill, the offer closes. Watch HfP for announcements.
Validity: 12 months from match. Requalification requires meeting TAP Miles&Go requirements.
Note: One TAP Gold benefit — gifting Gold to a friend — is NOT available to status-matched members. All other Star Alliance Gold benefits apply fully.
If you hold BA Silver and have €199 to spend, TAP Gold (full Star Alliance Gold) is significantly better than Lufthansa Frequent Traveller (LH Group lounges only). Lufthansa at €99 is cheaper but delivers far less. If lounge access on United, Singapore, Turkish, and other partners matters to you, TAP is the clear winner. The extra €100 buys alliance-wide access rather than Lufthansa-only access.
3. ITA Volare → Lufthansa — The Free Route
A surprising number of UK travellers hold ITA Volare status from matches that ran 2-3 years ago. ITA has left SkyTeam and is joining Star Alliance as part of Lufthansa Group. Volare members can now match to Miles & More for free.
ITA Club Plus → Frequent Traveller. ITA Premium or Executive → Senator (Star Alliance Gold). Valid to February 2027.
Restriction: If your Miles & More account has already received a match via StatusMatch.com, you are not eligible for this campaign. Check before applying.
4. Turkish Airlines Challenge — Status From Any Alliance
Turkish accepts matches from oneworld, SkyTeam, and Star Alliance. You need at least oneworld Emerald or Sapphire, SkyTeam Elite Plus, or Star Alliance Gold from another programme.
How it works: Apply online with proof of status (passport photo, status screenshot, recent mileage statement). If accepted, you get Miles&Smiles Elite (Star Alliance Gold) for 4 months. Fly one international Turkish Airlines flight within those 4 months and status extends to 12 months. Earn 15,000 status miles on Turkish flights in the first year and status extends to 24 months total.
Requalification: After the matched period, standard Turkish requirements apply: 25,000 status miles on any Star Alliance carrier (no Turkish-only requirement) for 2-year renewal. This is one of the most accessible ongoing requalification thresholds in the alliance.
Practical tip: A BA Gold holder could match to Turkish Elite via the challenge for free (plus the cost of one Turkish flight). This stacks with the Lufthansa Senator match — you can hold both simultaneously. One LHR–Istanbul return in Economy satisfies the one-flight requirement and costs under £200.
Turkish Elite status lasts 2 years (vs 1 year for most programmes). Requalification requires 25,000 miles on any Star Alliance carrier — no Turkish-specific requirement. If you fly 2-3 long-haul Star Alliance trips per year regardless of carrier, Turkish status renews itself naturally. Pair this with Istanbul’s extraordinary CIP lounge complex and Turkish’s 340+ destinations, and it becomes one of the most practical Star Alliance Gold options for active travellers.
5. Aegean Miles+Bonus — Lifetime Gold
Not a match — an earned pathway. But included here because it is the cheapest route to permanent Star Alliance Gold and is often combined with a match to accelerate progress.
Requirements: Sign up (free, 1,000 welcome miles). Earn 4,000 status miles in 12 months → Blue tier. Earn 16,000 more status miles in 12 months → Gold. Total: 20,000 status miles. Once Gold, keep it forever with one flight credited every 36 months.
Segment requirement: Aegean previously required 4 Aegean-operated flights to count towards status. If this still applies, you need to fit in flights to/from Greece. A long weekend in Athens with 2 return flights covers it. Check current rules before committing.
Earning rates: Not all flights earn equally on Aegean. Lufthansa First Class earns 300% of distance. Business (C, D, Z, J) earns 150-200%. Many discounted Economy fares earn 25-50% only. One Lufthansa Business return to Asia (~10,000+ miles at 200%) gets you roughly halfway. Check Aegean’s partner earning tables per airline before crediting.
6. Marriott Bonvoy → KrisFlyer — The Hotel Crossover
Marriott Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador members get a one-off match to KrisFlyer Elite Silver. Take 4 Singapore Airlines flights within 6 months and you upgrade to KrisFlyer Elite Gold (Star Alliance Gold).
Marriott Gold members: Can take a status challenge — 2 Singapore Airlines flights in 6 months for Elite Silver (not Gold). Less useful.
Practical for: UK travellers who already hold Marriott top-tier status (perhaps through Amex Platinum) and have Asia trips planned. Four Singapore Airlines flights within 6 months is a reasonable ask if you are routing through Changi anyway.
The Triple-Alliance Stack
A BA Gold holder can cover all three alliances simultaneously:
oneworld Emerald: Already held via BA Gold.
+ Star Alliance Gold: Lufthansa Senator via €99 match. Valid to Feb 2027.
+ SkyTeam Elite Plus: Virgin Atlantic Gold via free match from BA Gold.
Total additional cost: €99. Three alliances. 60+ airlines. Lounge access virtually everywhere in the world.
A BA Silver holder can also stack: oneworld Sapphire (BA Silver) + Star Alliance Gold (TAP €199 match) + SkyTeam Elite Plus (Virgin Gold, free match from BA Silver). Total additional cost: €199.
Match while your BA status is still active. If BA drops you a tier in April 2026, the matches available to you change dramatically. BA Gold → Senator becomes BA Silver → Frequent Traveller (far less useful). BA Silver → TAP Gold becomes BA Bronze → nothing (TAP requires Silver minimum). Apply for every match you want before your BA renewal date. The 12-month matched status gives you a full year regardless of what happens to your BA tier afterwards.
Star Alliance has more status match routes open right now than any other alliance. BA Gold holders: Lufthansa Senator for €99 (alliance-wide Gold to Feb 2027). BA Silver holders: TAP Gold for €199 (full alliance Gold) is significantly better than Lufthansa Frequent Traveller for €99 (LH lounges only). BA Bronze holders: Lufthansa Frequent Traveller for €99 gives lounge access you do not get from BA. ITA Volare holders: free Lufthansa match.
