How to Earn Avios Without Flying
Where most Avios actually come from in the UK — and how balances grow without stepping on a plane
For many UK travellers, the majority of Avios are not earned in the air. They come from everyday spending and partner activity that runs alongside normal life. A well-aligned earning setup can generate 30,000–60,000+ Avios per year from ground-level activity alone — more than most leisure travellers would earn from flying.
This is the shift that makes the programme usable. Instead of waiting for occasional flights to build a balance, Avios accumulate continuously through behaviour that already exists — grocery shopping, fuel, bills, subscriptions, travel bookings and card spend. Once those channels are aligned, redemptions become realistic far sooner than relying on flying alone.
Credit cards are the single most powerful earning lever in the UK ecosystem, but they are covered in their own dedicated guides. This article focuses on everything else — the partners, portals, conversions and everyday channels that build Avios alongside (or instead of) card earning.
In the UK, flying is often the smallest part of Avios earning. Credit cards and partners do most of the work — and once those channels are aligned, Avios build continuously rather than occasionally. The strongest collectors are not frequent flyers. They are people who have routed their existing spending through Avios-earning pathways.
The Shopping Portal: Your First Habit
The BA Shopping Portal (shopping.ba.com) is the most underused earning channel in the UK Avios ecosystem. It covers over 1,500 retailers — fashion, electronics, homeware, travel, subscriptions and groceries — with earn rates ranging from 1 to 15+ Avios per £1 depending on the retailer and any active promotions. It is the same portal whether you access it via ba.com or avios.com — same retailers, same rates, one system.
The process is simple: log in with your BA Club credentials, find the retailer, click through, and complete your purchase. The price is the same as buying direct. The difference is that the transaction is tracked through the Avios system, triggering points alongside the purchase.
This is also where stacking begins. A single purchase can generate Avios from the portal and additional Avios from the payment card used at checkout. That one behaviour — portal first, then card — turns a single transaction into two separate Avios deposits on a purchase you were making anyway. Over a year, this compounds significantly.
Seasonal events — Black Friday, January sales, summer promotions — regularly see elevated portal rates. Some retailers periodically double or triple their standard earn. Checking the portal before any online purchase takes seconds and can yield thousands of Avios over the course of a year.
The earning rates listed throughout this guide were taken from the Avios shopping portal in March 2026. Portal rates change frequently — promotional boosts run for weeks then reset, partners join and leave, and standard rates are adjusted without notice. Always check the current rate on the portal before making a purchase decision based on Avios earning.

When Tracking Goes Wrong
Shopping portals rely on tracking cookies to attribute purchases. When tracking fails, Avios do not post automatically. The most common causes are ad blockers, cashback browser extensions, navigating away mid-purchase, switching devices, and mobile apps overriding the browser session — this is a known issue with retailers like John Lewis and IHG, where the app opens automatically and breaks the tracking chain.
Clean tracking practice: use a fresh browser tab (incognito mode works well), disable ad blockers for the session, accept all cookies on the portal, click through to the retailer and complete checkout in one continuous session without navigating away. Keep confirmation emails and order numbers — if Avios fail to post, you can submit a missing claim once the retailer’s validation period has passed.
Cashback extensions (TopCashback, Quidco browser plugins) and voucher plug-ins can override the portal’s tracking cookie and prevent Avios from crediting — even if you started the purchase through the portal. If you want the Avios, disable these extensions before clicking through. You cannot earn both cashback and portal Avios on the same transaction.
Supermarket Shopping: The Nectar Route
The Nectar–Avios partnership, launched in January 2021, connects Sainsbury’s and its wider ecosystem directly into the Avios world. The conversion rate is 400 Nectar points → 250 Avios, and transfers work in both directions (400 Avios → 400 Nectar points going the other way).
The base earning rate at Sainsbury’s is 1 Nectar point per £1 — modest on its own. The real value lies in the bonus Nectar offers available through the Nectar app, which can add 20–120+ bonus points per qualifying item. A weekly shop that generates 50 base Nectar points might generate 200–400+ when bonus offers are activated. Over a year, this adds up to thousands of Avios from grocery shopping alone.
Nectar also earns at Argos, Habitat, Esso and hundreds of other partners. Auto-conversion can be set up so Nectar points transfer to Avios weekly without manual intervention.
Convert Nectar to Avios with intent, not automatically. The 400:250 rate means you pay 1.6 Nectar points per Avios — reasonable if you value Avios at 1p+ each. But Nectar has some strong direct redemptions too (Caffè Nero at 400 points per drink is arguably better value per point). If you have a specific Avios redemption in mind, convert. If not, holding Nectar gives you optionality.
Travel Bookings
Travel purchases tend to be higher value than everyday spending, which makes them some of the most productive non-flying earning opportunities in the ecosystem. The Avios shopping portal lists dozens of travel partners — hotels, car hire, transfers, insurance and experiences — many at rates well above the standard 1–3 Avios per £1 you see with high-street retailers.

BA Holidays deserves a special mention. At 1 Avios per £1 on the total package price, the raw rate looks modest — but it is one of the highest-stacking opportunities available. A single booking can earn Avios from the package, Avios and Tier Points from the flight, double Tier Points on qualifying packages (BA flight plus 3+ nights), and card points from the payment. No other channel produces this many earning layers at once.
BA Holidays is the single best stacking opportunity in the ecosystem. A family holiday booked as a BA Holidays package can simultaneously earn package Avios, flight Avios, Tier Points (doubled on qualifying bookings), and credit card points — all from one transaction.

Travel Insurance
Insurance is one of the most overlooked earning opportunities on the portal — the earn rates are often flat bonuses rather than per-£1 rates, meaning a single policy purchase can generate hundreds or thousands of Avios.

Fuel
UK drivers can earn Avios at the pump through two separate routes.
BP — Earn BPme Rewards points via the BPme app (1 point per litre), then convert to Avios at 40 points → 25 Avios. The effective rate is roughly 0.6 Avios per litre, working out to approximately 0.8p per Avios — genuinely competitive compared to buying Avios outright.
Esso — Earn Nectar points via the Esso app (1 per £1 of fuel spend), then convert 400 Nectar → 250 Avios. The effective rate depends on fuel price but is broadly comparable to BP. Esso periodically runs double Nectar promotions on premium fuels, which can tip the balance.
In both cases, paying with an Avios-earning credit card at the pump adds another layer of earning on top.

Loyalty Conversions
Several major UK loyalty currencies can be converted into Avios, allowing activity in other programmes to feed into the same balance. The critical principle with all transfers is timing: flexible currencies are more valuable before conversion because they retain optionality. Once transferred into Avios, they typically cannot be moved back. Transfer with intent — when you have a specific redemption in mind — rather than converting simply to inflate your balance.

HSBC runs periodic transfer bonuses (recently 25% extra) on Premier points moved to Avios. If you hold HSBC Premier rewards, wait for these promotions before converting — they run several times per year and meaningfully improve the effective rate.
Banking
Barclays Avios Rewards — 1,500+ Avios per month for a £12 monthly fee, plus up to 25,000 Avios as a switch bonus, plus an annual choice between 7,000 bonus Avios or a BA cabin upgrade voucher. Requires Barclays Premier Banking (£75k+ income or £100k+ invested). This is the only UK current account that earns Avios — 18,000+ per year from monthly awards alone, before the switch bonus or anniversary reward. A £5/month discount applies when holding a Barclaycard Avios card alongside.

What Actually Moves the Balance
Most people do not struggle because earning is impossible. They struggle because earning is scattered — a few Avios from one portal, a small conversion from Nectar, occasional card points sitting in a flexible programme. Each piece feels productive but none builds a balance large enough to matter on its own.
The strongest Avios balances in the UK are built on three principles:
Consistency — one main earning card used for all possible spending, every day.
Stacking — routing purchases through the portal first, then paying with the card. Two Avios deposits from one transaction.
Concentration — feeding one primary Avios balance rather than splitting earning across multiple programmes.
Big jumps come from sign-up bonuses and high-value travel purchases. Slow, reliable growth comes from everyday spending and the shopping portal. The strongest balances combine both: momentum first, then consistency.
Most Avios in the UK are earned without flying. Route spending through Avios pathways first. Keep flexible points flexible until you have a redemption in mind. Stack wherever possible. Concentrate earning into one primary balance. When those habits are in place, flying becomes the bonus — not the strategy.
