Lounge Review Iberia Velázquez Premium Lounge Madrid Barajas · Terminal 4S · Non-Schengen

Iberia’s flagship lounge at its Madrid hub, located in the satellite Terminal 4S after passport control. Serves non-Schengen departures including all UK-bound flights. Access for business class passengers on Iberia and oneworld partner airlines, plus oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members (including BA Gold). Showers available. Open daily 06:00–01:00.

ⓘ FINDING THE ENTRANCE

The lounge entrance is inside the T4S duty free shop — not at the edge of it, but roughly halfway through as you walk towards the gates. It is genuinely easy to walk past on a first visit. Look for the signage on the left-hand wall after passport control and stay alert as you move through the shop. Once you’ve found it the first time, you’ll have no trouble on subsequent visits.

The Lounge

The Velázquez is Iberia’s flagship lounge at Madrid Barajas and, by most measures, one of the better business class lounges in Europe. It serves non-Schengen departures from Terminal 4S — which in practice means long-haul Iberia flights to Latin America, the Americas and beyond, plus all flights to the UK including British Airways services back to Heathrow. If you hold oneworld Sapphire status — BA Gold or equivalent on any oneworld carrier — this is your lounge.

The space runs the full length of a long wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the airport apron. The result is a lounge that feels genuinely light and open during daylight hours — and, on a quiet weekday evening, exceptionally calm. It is a long, narrow room rather than a wide one, but the window aspect prevents it from feeling cramped. The overall impression is of a lounge that takes itself seriously without being intimidating.

Layout and Seating

Seating is arranged predominantly along the window side of the lounge, with buffet stations, the bar and facilities positioned on the inner wall. The layout works well — window seats get the light and the apron views, while those further in have easier access to food and drink. Power points are available at the majority of positions, and the lounge offers luggage storage lockers near the welcome desk, which is a practical touch for those arriving on a long-haul connection and not wanting to carry bags throughout.

On a weekday evening the lounge was quiet — noticeably so. This is one of those airports where timing makes a significant difference to the experience, and an off-peak visit delivers the lounge at its best: unhurried, well-staffed, and with no difficulty finding a good seat.

Food and Drink

The buffet is the highlight. Hot dishes, cold options, salads, cheese, charcuterie and a rotating selection of pastries and sweet items are all available. The evening spread is well-stocked and the quality is a cut above what most European business class lounges deliver from a self-serve format. The donuts, in particular, are worth knowing about — a small detail, but genuinely good and the kind of thing that stays with you.

Iberia’s wine offer is consistently strong both in the air and on the ground, and the Velázquez is no exception. Spanish bottles dominate, as they should. Beer and soft drinks are available from self-serve stations in addition to the staffed bar. The overall drinks offer is better than most comparable lounges at European hubs.

Showers

Shower suites are available and consistently well reviewed. To access one, present yourself at the welcome desk on arrival and request a cubicle — you’ll be given a four-digit code that unlocks the door. A waitlist operates at busy times, though on quieter evenings access is reported to be straightforward. Towels and a basic toiletries kit are provided.

Getting In on oneworld Sapphire

Walk-in access is straightforward. Present your oneworld Sapphire status card (BA Gold or equivalent) and a same-day boarding pass at the welcome desk — no pre-booking required, no app needed. The desk is immediately inside the lounge entrance. Staff are efficient and the process takes under a minute. Note that one guest is permitted under Sapphire access — useful if you’re travelling with a companion who doesn’t hold their own status.

❖ PTP LOUNGE RATING

The Velázquez is one of the stronger arguments for routing through Madrid rather than another European hub. If you hold oneworld Sapphire status — BA Gold or equivalent — walk-in access is free and the experience justifies arriving at the airport with time to spare.

The food offer is genuinely good, the wine selection is better than average, and on a quiet weekday evening the lounge is hard to fault. It compares favourably with much of what Heathrow offers at the same access level, and comfortably outperforms most European carrier lounges we’ve visited.
