Using Avios on Partner Airlines

Partner redemptions unlock the real flexibility of Avios. By comparing airlines, routes, taxes, and availability — not just British Airways flights — you can dramatically improve the value of every redemption.

Using Avios on Partner Airlines

When booking beyond British Airways makes more sense — and how to do it

Most people hear “Avios” and assume it means booking British Airways flights. In reality, Avios can be used on partner airlines across the oneworld alliance — sometimes with lower taxes, better availability, stronger products, or more useful routes than BA offers on its own.

This is where the Avios currency becomes genuinely flexible. The same points that book a short-haul BA flight to Paris can also book Qatar Airways QSuite to the Maldives, Cathay Pacific Business to Hong Kong, or an American Airlines hop across the United States. Understanding when and how to look beyond BA is what separates adequate Avios use from excellent Avios use.

Why the Best Redemption Is Not Always British Airways

BA redemptions frequently come with higher carrier surcharges, UK Air Passenger Duty on departures from the UK, and limited long-haul premium cabin availability. Partner airlines operate under different pricing structures and cost components. The result is that two flights of similar distance can cost dramatically different amounts in both Avios and cash depending on which airline operates the flight.

The difference is most noticeable on long-haul Business Class. A Club World return to New York via BA costs approximately 176,000 Avios plus £400 in cash (post-December 2025 pricing). Booking a comparable Business Class flight to New York via Iberia from Madrid can cost significantly fewer Avios with lower surcharges — and avoids UK APD entirely if you position to Madrid.

Avios is just the currency. The airline you choose — and the programme you book through — determines the real value.

✦ Insight

Before any long-haul booking, check the Avios price through at least two programmes. Transferring Avios between BA, Iberia and Aer Lingus is free and instant. Qatar Privilege Club is a separate transfer (also free, 1:1) but takes up to 24 hours. There is no reason not to compare before committing.

The Key Partners and Where They Shine

Qatar Airways

One of the most compelling uses of Avios for long-haul Business Class. Qatar’s QSuite product is regularly ranked among the best Business Class seats in the world — closing doors, lie-flat beds, and the option for couples to create a shared suite.

Qatar operates from its Doha hub, with connections to Asia, Africa, Australasia and the Middle East. For UK-based travellers, this means a transit through Doha on most routings — which adds time but can deliver a significantly better product and lower cost than BA direct.

Pricing through Qatar Privilege Club: London to Doha in Business Class costs approximately 42,500 Avios one-way off-peak via Privilege Club. Doha to further destinations like Bangkok, Singapore or the Maldives adds another segment. US gateways to Doha in QSuite: around 70,000 Avios one-way off-peak. Peak pricing through Privilege Club is roughly double (140,000 Avios) — partner programmes like BA do not have access to peak availability, only saver fares.

Availability: Qatar guarantees at least two Business Class reward seats per flight for Avios, but unlike BA, they do not necessarily release them at schedule open. QR has a habit of releasing saver seats in waves at unpredictable times throughout the year. Saver availability has become significantly harder to find in 2025–26, with Qatar pushing more inventory into the higher-priced “Flexi” tier.

Booking: You can book Qatar flights using Avios on either ba.com or qatarairways.com. From London, the pricing should be identical on both sites. From Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh, ba.com may charge more Avios due to an unfixed IT issue — always compare both sites for non-London departures. You cannot use a BA Companion Voucher on Qatar flights.

Seat selection warning: Qatar now charges for advance seat selection on Business Class award tickets. You can skip this and take your chances at online check-in (48 or 24 hours before departure), which works well on QSuite-equipped aircraft where every solo seat is excellent. For couples wanting a specific paired suite, the fee may be worth paying.

★ Pro Tip

Qatar uses “married segment availability” — if you cannot see saver seats from London to Bangkok, try searching from Manchester, Dublin or Amsterdam as your origin. Different starting points can unlock availability that does not appear on the London route. Search tools like Seats.aero now include Qatar Privilege Club and make scanning multiple dates and routes significantly faster.

Iberia

Iberia operates long-haul flights from its Madrid hub to destinations across Latin America, the Caribbean and the US. For Avios holders, Iberia’s main advantages are lower surcharges than BA and the ability to avoid UK Air Passenger Duty by departing from Madrid.

Iberia has its own peak and off-peak calendar, which differs from BA’s. On overlapping routes, Iberia is often cheaper in Avios — particularly to the Americas. The surcharge difference can be dramatic: a BA Club World return to New York might carry £400+ in taxes and charges, while a comparable Iberia Business Class return from Madrid to New York can be significantly less.

Transferring Avios: Free and instant between BA and Iberia Plus. Your Iberia Plus account must have been open for at least 90 days before you can transfer Avios into it — set this up now if you have not already.

Companion Voucher: BA Amex Companion Vouchers can be used on Iberia flights (vouchers earned from September 2021 onwards). This makes Iberia particularly attractive for voucher holders — lower taxes plus two-for-one Avios pricing from Madrid.

Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus operates direct transatlantic flights from Dublin and also from Manchester — to New York, Orlando, Barbados and selected US destinations. The airline is always off-peak outside school holidays, which simplifies pricing.

For UK-based travellers not in London, Aer Lingus direct flights from Manchester are particularly valuable — no positioning to London required, and surcharges are generally lower than BA. BA Companion Vouchers work on Aer Lingus flights too.

Departing from Dublin avoids UK APD, which can save a meaningful amount on premium cabin bookings. Some collectors position to Dublin with a cheap cash fare specifically to start their Avios redemption from Ireland.

American Airlines

AA is the most useful partner for US domestic flights. Post-December 2025, short-haul AA flights booked through BA start at approximately 13,500 Avios one-way for distances under 650 miles — covering routes like New York to Washington, Chicago to Detroit, or Dallas to Houston. Surcharges on AA domestic are typically very low.

AA is also useful for connecting onward from a transatlantic flight. If you fly BA to New York and need to reach a smaller US city, an AA domestic segment in Avios can be far cheaper than buying a separate cash ticket.

Availability on AA through BA can be limited. Checking the same flights through other oneworld programmes (like Qatar Privilege Club) sometimes reveals additional inventory.

Finnair

Finnair flies from Helsinki to destinations across Asia, and its Business Class product is solid. The standout redemption is Singapore to Helsinki in Business Class — still approximately 62,500 Avios one-way even after the December 2025 increase. This is one of the best-value long-haul Business Class redemptions in the Avios ecosystem.

For UK travellers, Finnair is most useful for Asian destinations where a Helsinki transit offers a shorter or more convenient routing than Doha (Qatar) or a BA direct service. Helsinki is also a good connecting point for Scandinavian and Baltic destinations.

Japan Airlines

JAL offers premium cabin availability on routes across Asia and to the US from Tokyo. The service and product quality is consistently high. Post-devaluation, JAL awards booked through BA saw some of the steepest increases (8–14%), but availability can still be good — particularly in Business Class on routes like London–Tokyo.

Cathay Pacific

Cathay’s Business Class product is strong, particularly on routes through Hong Kong to Australia, Southeast Asia and mainland China. Post-devaluation pricing has increased, and surcharges can be higher than some other partners, but availability — especially in Business — can be better than BA on comparable routes to Asia.

How Partner Pricing Works

Partner flights booked through BA use BA’s distance-based pricing. The Avios cost depends on the distance flown, cabin class, and whether the date is peak or off-peak on BA’s calendar. Taxes and surcharges are set by the operating airline, not BA — which is why the same Avios price can come with very different cash costs depending on which airline flies the route.

If you book the same partner flight through a different Avios programme (e.g. Qatar Privilege Club instead of BA), the Avios price may differ because each programme has its own pricing chart. Qatar, for example, sets its own pricing for flights it operates — and that pricing can be lower than what BA charges for the same QR flight.

Two exceptions: Qatar Airways and Finnair both use Avios as their native currency and set their own pricing regardless of which programme you book through. Their flights are priced identically whether searched on ba.com, qatarairways.com, or finnair.com — though taxes can still vary by booking origin.

⚠ Warning

BA prices awards additively on connections. A London–Doha–Bangkok routing is priced as two separate segments added together, not as a single through-fare. This means connections can push you into higher distance bands and significantly increase the total Avios cost. Direct routes almost always price more cleanly than indirect routings. Always compare the total Avios for a connecting itinerary against booking each segment separately.

How to Search Partner Availability

Start by searching on ba.com — it shows partner availability alongside BA flights when you search for Avios bookings. Select “Qatar Airways” or the relevant partner from the results if they appear.

If partner availability does not show on ba.com, it does not necessarily mean no seats exist. Try these approaches:

Search on the partner’s own site. Log into Qatar Privilege Club and search there. Or check Iberia Plus, Aer Lingus AerClub, or Finnair Plus. Each programme may show different availability for the same flights.

Use Seats.aero. This third-party tool searches award availability across multiple programmes simultaneously, including Qatar Privilege Club. It is particularly useful for spotting QSuite availability and comparing what is visible through different loyalty programmes.

Search segment by segment. If a full connecting itinerary does not price on ba.com, search the long-haul leg first. Once you confirm that segment has availability, build the rest of the journey around it.

Try different origin points. Qatar’s married segment availability means a route that shows nothing from London might show seats from Manchester, Dublin or another gateway.

Check both directions. Availability can differ outbound versus inbound. If London–Doha shows nothing but Doha–London does, you may be able to construct a one-way booking for the available direction and fill the other leg separately.

★ Pro Tip

When comparing partner options, treat every redemption as two prices: Avios required and cash required. A flight that looks cheap in points but carries high surcharges is not necessarily better value than one with more Avios and lower cash. The total out-of-pocket cost — Avios valued at roughly 1p each, plus the cash element — gives you the real comparison.

When to Book Through BA vs the Partner Programme

For most partner flights from London, booking through ba.com or the partner’s own site produces identical or near-identical pricing. The main reasons to choose one over the other:

Book through BA when: You are in a BA Household Account and need to pool Avios from multiple members. You want to use a Companion Voucher on Iberia or Aer Lingus (vouchers can only be applied through BA). You prefer dealing with BA’s customer service for changes and cancellations.

Book through the partner when: You are departing from outside London (Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh) on Qatar — ba.com may overcharge due to an IT glitch. You want access to Qatar’s own saver availability, which is sometimes visible on qatarairways.com but not ba.com. You prefer the partner’s interface or want to manage the booking directly with the operating airline.

Common Mistakes

Only searching BA. The biggest value mistake is searching one airline only. Partner availability and pricing are what make Avios flexible — but only if you actively compare.

Assuming similar surcharges. The operating carrier and departure country can change the cash element dramatically, even when the Avios price looks identical.

Trying to use Companion Vouchers on Qatar. BA Companion Vouchers work on BA, Iberia and Aer Lingus only. They cannot be used on Qatar, Cathay, JAL, AA or any other partner.

Not having an Iberia account ready. The 90-day waiting period before you can transfer Avios into Iberia Plus catches people out. Open the account now, even if you have no immediate plans to use it.

Ignoring Finnair and Qatar for pricing. These two programmes use Avios natively and sometimes price the same flights differently from BA. Always check their sites when booking flights they operate.

✓ Section Takeaway

Avios are not just a BA currency. They unlock Qatar QSuite, Cathay Business, AA domestic, Iberia to the Americas, and Finnair to Asia — often at lower cost and with better products than BA direct. The strongest collectors search at least two programmes before every long-haul booking, transfer Avios to wherever the best deal sits, and treat departure point and surcharges as seriously as the Avios price itself. Start with BA to learn the system, then expand outward as the fundamentals become clear.
