Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
Singapore Airlines is the gold standard of premium air travel — and KrisFlyer is the only programme that reliably unlocks it. Suites Class (the A380 double bed), First Class (the 777 private suite), and Business Class are all primarily reserved for KrisFlyer members. Star Alliance partners see almost no Suites or First availability, and limited Business availability. If you want to fly Singapore Airlines in a premium cabin using miles, KrisFlyer is the programme you need.
For UK travellers, the Changi hub connects London to the whole of Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Indian subcontinent via a single, efficient transfer. The product is exceptional. The programme is specialist — not designed for everyday earning, but for deploying transferable points at the right moment to access one of the world’s finest airline experiences.
Singapore Suites and First Class are only bookable with KrisFlyer miles — not Aeroplan, not Miles & More, not any other Star Alliance programme. Business Class availability is heavily restricted to KrisFlyer members. Amex MR transfers to KrisFlyer (at a reduced 3:2 ratio in the UK). If Singapore Airlines premium cabins are the target, KrisFlyer is the only door.
The Products
Suites Class (A380): Six private suites with a double bed option for couples. Separate armchair and bed. Slide-closed doors. Multi-course dining. Widely considered the most exclusive commercial airline product in the world. Currently operates on the London–Singapore route on the A380.
First Class (777-300ER): Four private suites with closing doors. Separate seat and bed. Exceptional food and wine. Not available on ultra-long-haul nonstop A350 routes — only on 777 services via a connection.
Business Class: Lie-flat seats in 1-2-1 configuration across the fleet. The newest product on the A350 and 787 features larger seats with improved privacy. Singapore’s Business Class is consistently rated among the top 3 globally.
Premium Economy: Available on A380 and A350. Wider seat, improved dining, amenity kit. A significant step up from Economy on long-haul.
The Award Chart
KrisFlyer uses a zone-based award chart with two pricing levels: Saver (fewer miles, limited availability) and Advantage (more miles, more seats). Since November 2025, a third “Access” level exists with dynamic pricing — significantly more expensive but guaranteeing a seat when Saver and Advantage are sold out.
Singapore Airlines Saver awards (one-way, from/to UK)
| Route | Economy | Premium Econ | Business | First/Suites |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London–Singapore | ~36,000 | ~56,000 | ~73,500 | ~105,000 |
| London–Singapore–Sydney | ~47,000 | ~73,500 | ~94,500 | ~131,250 |
| London–Singapore–Bangkok/Bali | ~36,000 | ~56,000 | ~73,500 | ~105,000 |
Approximate Saver rates after November 2025 changes. Advantage rates are typically 30-50% higher. Access (dynamic) rates can be 80-100% above Advantage. Taxes are generally low on Singapore Airlines — often under £100 per direction. Always aim for Saver pricing.
Each month, Singapore Airlines publishes Spontaneous Escapes — 30% discounts on Saver awards for selected routes. Travel typically within the next 1-2 months. When London–Singapore appears, Business drops from ~73,500 to ~51,500. Check monthly at singaporeair.com. These are the best-value KrisFlyer redemptions available.
Earning KrisFlyer Miles from the UK
KrisFlyer is not an everyday earning programme for UK travellers. There is no UK KrisFlyer credit card. The earning paths:
Amex MR: Transfers to KrisFlyer at 3:2 (not 1:1). 30,000 Amex MR = 20,000 KrisFlyer miles. This reduced rate is the main drawback — you need 50% more Amex points than equivalent Avios or Flying Blue transfers. Still the primary UK earning route for most travellers.
HSBC Premier World Elite: Earns 1.5 KrisFlyer miles per £1 (3 HSBC points per £1, converting 2:1). Overseas spend earns 2 KrisFlyer miles per £1. Sign-up bonus of 20,000 KrisFlyer miles. This is the best UK credit card for KrisFlyer earning — but requires HSBC Premier eligibility (£100,000 income or savings with HSBC). If you qualify, it significantly outperforms the Amex route at 0.66 miles per £1.
Credit flights: Any Star Alliance flight can be credited to KrisFlyer. Earning is distance-based by fare class. Reasonable rates on premium cabins.
Marriott Bonvoy: Transfer Bonvoy points to KrisFlyer at 3:1 (with 25% bonus at 60,000 chunks — effectively 3:1.25). Also, Marriott Bonvoy Platinum/Titanium members get a one-off status match to KrisFlyer Elite Silver. Take 4 Singapore Airlines flights within 6 months to upgrade to Elite Gold. A useful back-door route to Star Alliance Gold if you hold Marriott top-tier status.
Mile expiry: 36 months hard expiry. Miles expire 3 years after being earned, regardless of activity. This is stricter than most programmes — no “activity resets the clock.” If miles are approaching expiry, you can transfer them to Marriott Bonvoy at 2:1 (poor value, but better than losing them entirely). Plan to earn and redeem within the window.
Redemption nominees: You can only redeem for yourself plus up to 5 nominated people. Nominees are locked for 6 months once added. Plan ahead if booking for family.
The Partner Sweet Spot: Europe to the Middle East
The single best-value KrisFlyer partner redemption — and one that HfP readers use regularly. Europe to the Middle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Muscat) in Business Class on Lufthansa via Frankfurt, SWISS via Zurich, or Turkish via Istanbul: approximately 74,000 KrisFlyer miles return (increased from 67,000 in November 2025).
For comparison, British Airways charges 160,000–180,000 Avios + £375 for the same cabin class to the Middle East. KrisFlyer costs less than half the miles with lower taxes. The routing is via a European hub rather than direct, but the product on Lufthansa or SWISS Business is excellent.
At 3:2 from Amex, you need approximately 111,000 Amex MR points for a return Business trip to Dubai via KrisFlyer vs 160,000+ Avios via BA. Even with the worse transfer rate, KrisFlyer wins convincingly on this corridor.
Scoot: Budget Redemptions from 1,500 Miles
KrisFlyer miles can book Scoot, Singapore Airlines’ low-cost carrier, for Economy flights from just 1,500 miles one-way on short-haul routes. Scoot serves 70+ destinations across Asia, Australia, and the Middle East from Singapore.
This is useful for connecting beyond Singapore on a budget — fly Singapore Airlines Business to Changi, then Scoot Economy to Bali, Phuket, or Gold Coast for a handful of miles. Not luxury, but extends the network cheaply.
UK Amex MR transfers to KrisFlyer at 3:2 — meaning 150,000 Amex points = 100,000 KrisFlyer miles. This is worse than the 1:1 rate to Avios, Flying Blue, or Aeroplan. Only transfer to KrisFlyer when you are specifically targeting a Singapore Airlines premium cabin that cannot be booked through any other programme. For Star Alliance partner flights, Aeroplan is almost always better value.
Availability: The Key to KrisFlyer
KrisFlyer’s value is entirely dependent on finding Saver availability. The programme has three tiers of access:
Suites and First Class: Restricted exclusively to KrisFlyer members. No Star Alliance partner can see or book these seats. Availability is limited (6 Suites seats, 4 First seats per aircraft) and competitive. Book 355 days ahead for the best chance. Check regularly — last-minute releases do occur.
Business Class: Primarily available to KrisFlyer members. Some limited availability visible to Star Alliance partners on short/medium-haul routes. Long-haul Business is mostly KrisFlyer-only. Book early. Spontaneous Escapes can open discounted seats closer to departure.
Economy and Premium Economy: Broader availability via both KrisFlyer and Star Alliance partners. Easier to find but less differentiated from other programmes.
Star Alliance Partner Redemptions
KrisFlyer miles can book Star Alliance partner flights — but this is generally not where the programme delivers best value. Partner award pricing was increased in November 2025 (5-20% depending on route and cabin). Aeroplan typically offers better rates and no fuel surcharges for the same Star Alliance partners.
Exceptions where KrisFlyer partner redemptions can work:
Alaska Airlines: One of the best KrisFlyer partner sweet spots. West Coast to Hawaii from 13,500 miles Economy, transcontinental from 12,000 Economy. Rates unchanged in 2025 devaluation.
Short-haul within Asia: Intra-Asia partner flights (Thai, ANA, Asiana) can be competitively priced via KrisFlyer, particularly when connecting from a Singapore Airlines long-haul.
KrisFlyer passes on carrier surcharges from partner airlines. A Lufthansa or SWISS flight booked via KrisFlyer can carry hundreds in surcharges. United, TAP, and LOT charge minimal surcharges. Always check the total price before booking partner awards — for surcharge-heavy airlines, Aeroplan (no fuel surcharges) is almost always the better choice.
Status: Elite Silver and Elite Gold
| Tier | Elite miles required | Star Alliance | Key benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elite Silver | 25,000 in 12 months | Silver | Priority check-in, extra baggage, priority standby, waitlist priority |
| Elite Gold | 50,000 in 12 months | Gold | SilverKris Lounge access + 1 guest, priority boarding, Star Alliance Gold worldwide |
| PPS Club | S$25,000 spend on SQ | Gold | The Private Room access (Changi), enhanced upgrade priority, lifetime tiers available |
KrisFlyer status requires substantial flying on Singapore Airlines and Star Alliance partners. For most UK travellers, earning KrisFlyer Gold through flying alone is only practical if you fly Singapore Airlines long-haul in premium cabins 3-4+ times per year. For Star Alliance Gold via a different route, the Lufthansa €99 match from BA Gold is far cheaper.
Changi Airport
Singapore Changi is consistently rated the world’s best airport. For KrisFlyer members with status or premium cabin tickets, the experience is exceptional: the SilverKris Lounge (Business), the Private Room (PPS Club — by invitation, with à la carte dining), and the First Class Lounge. Terminal 3’s butterfly garden, rooftop pool, and extensive retail complete the experience. Changi connections are typically 60-90 minutes with efficient transfer processes.
Who KrisFlyer Suits
Singapore Airlines premium cabin aspirations
If Suites, First, or Business on Singapore Airlines is the goal, KrisFlyer is the only programme that delivers. No other Star Alliance programme reliably accesses these cabins. Worth the 3:2 Amex penalty for this specific purpose.
Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand
Singapore’s Changi hub connects to 130+ destinations. For UK travellers heading to Southeast Asia (Bali, Bangkok, Vietnam, Philippines), Australia, or New Zealand, a single Changi connection on Singapore Airlines is among the most civilised ways to travel.
Less suited for…
General Star Alliance partner bookings (Aeroplan is better value with no surcharges). Everyday UK earning (3:2 Amex rate, no UK credit card, 36-month hard expiry). Travellers who need flexible date booking (Saver availability is limited and competitive).
KrisFlyer is a specialist programme for a specific purpose: booking Singapore Airlines premium cabins with miles. Suites and First are KrisFlyer-exclusive. Business availability is heavily restricted to members. The 3:2 Amex transfer rate and 36-month hard expiry make it unsuitable for casual accumulation. Use it deliberately: identify the Singapore Airlines seat you want, transfer Amex MR, and book. For general Star Alliance redemptions, use Aeroplan instead. For Singapore Airlines specifically, nothing else comes close.
