United Polaris Lounge T2, Heathrow

Polaris ticket or Premier 1K only. À la carte, full bar, complimentary showers. United's best lounge outside North America.

United Polaris Lounge — Terminal 2, London Heathrow

The United Polaris Lounge at Heathrow T2 is United’s premium lounge product for international business class passengers — a tier above the standard United Club, reserved for Polaris ticket holders and United’s top-tier MileagePlus Premier 1K members. It is a well-finished, generously sized room with à la carte dining, a full bar, and showers, and represents a meaningful step up from the United Club product. For a US network carrier, United has invested seriously in the Polaris Lounge concept, and the T2 product reflects that investment. It is not as celebrated as the SilverKris First Class Lounge in the same terminal, but it competes credibly with the business class tier and is a strong option for United passengers and Star Alliance Gold members who find the SilverKris Business Lounge closed at their departure time.

The lounge is located in T2 airside and operates on United’s departure schedule. United operates multiple daily departures from T2, which typically gives the Polaris Lounge broader effective hours than the SilverKris lounges — though this varies by season and should be verified at united.com before travel. Access is limited to United Polaris Business ticket holders, Premier 1K members, and Global Services members — Star Alliance Gold on its own does not access the Polaris Lounge. It does not accept Priority Pass, LoungeKey, or any card-access programme.

Access Routes

✦ Important

The Polaris Lounge is not a United Club and is not accessible via Star Alliance Gold status alone. Access requires a Polaris Business class ticket on an eligible United international flight, or Premier 1K / Global Services status. Star Alliance Gold members on United flights use the United Club or the SilverKris Business Lounge if open. Priority Pass and all card-access programmes are not accepted.

The Lounge

The Polaris Lounge at T2 is a large, well-proportioned space that follows the Polaris Lounge network design language — dark blue tones, warm lighting, quality materials, and a clear separation between dining, bar, and lounge seating zones. It is one of the larger airline lounges at T2 and handles its size well; the layout prevents it from feeling cavernous at quieter times while absorbing peak occupancy without the congestion that affects smaller lounges. Natural light is present but not dominant — the room is more interior in feel than the Qantas or Virgin lounges at T3. The finish is consistent and well-maintained.

There is no spa, which is the most notable absence relative to the Virgin Clubhouse at T3. The workspace provision is good — charging points are abundant and there is a dedicated work area. The overall atmosphere is professional and calm, suited to a business traveller audience. It does not have the character or the theatre of the better T3 lounges, but as a functional premium lounge it is well above the Star Alliance standard at T2.

Food & Drink

À la carte table service is the Polaris Lounge’s key differentiator from the United Club and from most Star Alliance business class lounges at T2. The menu covers breakfast, lunch and dinner with a rotation of dishes that is more considered than the generic buffet offer elsewhere in the terminal. A self-serve food station supplements the table service with lighter options throughout. Quality is consistently above contract lounge standard — not as precise as the SilverKris First Class Lounge but a meaningful step above the generic alliance lounge buffet. The breakfast service is the strongest meal period.

The bar is staffed throughout and offers spirits, wine, beer and cocktails, all complimentary. The wine selection is above average for a US carrier lounge — United has invested in the Polaris bar programme and it shows. Coffee is made to order. The overall drinks offer is strong for the tier and competes with the SilverKris Business Lounge rather than below it.

Showers

Showers are complimentary and of a good standard — private suites, amenity pack including toiletries, towels and hairdryer. The number of suites is adequate for typical occupancy given the lounge’s size; waits are possible at peak departure times. Book at reception on arrival. Condition is consistently reported as clean and well-maintained.

Getting In

The access picture is simpler than it might appear: Polaris Business ticket or Premier 1K on United-operated flights. The critical point for Star Alliance Gold members is that standard Gold status — United Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, or Gold earned on another Star Alliance carrier — does not access the Polaris Lounge. Those members are directed to the United Club, which is a separate and lower-tier product. Only Premier 1K and Global Services among the status tiers give Polaris Lounge access without a Polaris ticket.

For UK Amex Platinum cardholders, neither the Polaris Lounge nor the United Club accepts direct card access or Priority Pass. If you are flying United from T2 on an Amex Platinum card with no United status and no Polaris ticket, the Plaza Premium Lounge at T2 accepts Priority Pass and Amex Platinum and is the practical option — or the terminal’s retail dining. This is a gap worth being aware of before departure.

★ ELITE TIP

Premier 1K status on United is the most efficient route to Polaris Lounge access without buying a Polaris ticket — and it is also the level at which United’s complimentary upgrade programme becomes genuinely useful on transatlantic routes. If you are a regular United transatlantic traveller based in the UK, the combination of Polaris Lounge access and upgrade eligibility at 1K makes the status meaningfully more valuable than Premier Platinum. Qualification thresholds are PQP-based — verify current requirements at united.com as United has restructured its elite qualification in recent years.

✦ PTP LOUNGE RATING

United’s best lounge outside North America and a strong business class product by T2 standards. À la carte dining, a properly stocked bar, and complimentary showers in a well-maintained space. For United Polaris passengers and Premier 1K members it is the right room; for Star Alliance Gold members on United without 1K status, it is unavailable — the SilverKris Business Lounge (open daily 05:00–22:00) is the better alternative.
